Transcutaneous yellow fever vaccination of subjects with or without atopic dermatitis
Conclusions: YFV vaccination of patients with AD through the transcutaneous route revealed that high baseline IgE levels provide a potential biomarker for predicting reduced virus-specific immune memory after transcutaneous infection with a live virus.

Severe congenital herpes simplex virus infection
Case summary A preterm baby boy was delivered at 29 weeks of gestation following preterm labour. He was ventilated due to poor respiratory effort. His skin was unusually translucent, fragile, red and prominently vascularised. There were sparse pustules and areas of superficial ulceration and sloughing, especially on the face as shown in figure 1. His growth was appropriate for gestational age. Umbilical lines were sited in view of condition of the skin and he was started on parenteral fluids, antibiotics and antiviral therapy immediately following microbiological and virological investigations. Barrier nursing was commence...

Beneficial IFN-α treatment of tumorous herpes simplex blepharoconjunctivitis in dedicator of cytokinesis 8 deficiency
Autosomal-recessive hyper-IgE syndrome (AR-HIES) is a rare primary immunodeficiency caused by loss-of-function mutations in the gene DOCK8 (dedicator of cytokinesis 8). HIES follows an autosomal-dominant or -recessive trait and is characterized by high serum IgE levels, eczema, recurrent respiratory and skin infections, and fungal infections. Allergic disease manifestations, viral infections, and an elevated risk of squamous cell carcinoma and lymphoma are characteristics of DOCK8 deficiency. Lymphopenia, insufficient T- and B-cell memory compartment, impaired lymphocyte proliferation to mitogens, and natural killer (NK) c...

Plasmacytoid dendritic cell depletion in DOCK8 deficiency: Rescue of severe herpetic infections with IFN-α 2b therapy
Dedicator of cytokinesis 8 (DOCK8) deficiency is a primary combined immune deficiency characterized by profound T-cell lymphopenia and impaired humoral antibody responses, increased serum IgE levels, and eosinophilia. DOCK8 encodes a guanine nucleotide exchange factor that coordinates the actin cytoskeleton response to mitogenic and chemokine signals through the reversible activation of small G proteins, including cell division cycle 42. Subjects with DOCK8 deficiency are particularly susceptible to viral infections, especially with herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella-zoster virus, human papillomavirus, molluscum contagi...

Identification of novel gene signatures in patients with atopic dermatitis complicated by eczema herpeticum
A subset of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) is prone to disseminated herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection (ie, atopic dermatitis with a history of eczema herpeticum [ADEH+]). Biomarkers that identify ADEH+ are lacking.

We thank Ramakrishna and Cantin1 for their commentary on their article.2 The increase in interest in the action of intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIGs) in inflammatory diseases is clearly of interest, and this has led to a large increase in recent mechanistic studies, including the interesting work by Ramakrishna et al2 on herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis.

Publication date: April 2014 Source:Tanta Dental Journal, Volume 11, Issue 1 Author(s): Sh.A. Ali , H.I. Saudi The present research was conducted to introduce a Visual Basic expert system to help the postgraduate students in the diagnosis and treatment of the most common and rare oral ulcers. A total of sixty postgraduate students shared in the study. They received the system on a CD-ROM and asked to evaluate it using a printed questionnaire. The oral ulcerative conditions merged in the database included, aphthous ulcers, chancre, traumatic ulcers, histoplasmosis ulcers, acute herpetic ulcers, burns, herpangina, tubercul...

NIH-led scientists describe new herpes treatment strategy
(NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) Scientists have developed a novel treatment approach for persistent viral infections such as herpes. Using animal models of herpes simplex virus infection, researchers show that blocking the activity of a host cell protein called LSD1 reduces herpes infection, shedding and recurrence.
