Phenotypes and Emerging Endotypes of Chronic Rhinosinusitis
Publication date: July–August 2016 Source:The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice, Volume 4, Issue 4 Author(s): Claus Bachert, Cezmi A. Akdis Chronic rhinosinusitis can be differentiated into several phenotypes based on clinical criteria; however, these phenotypes do not teach us much about the underlying inflammatory mechanisms. Thus, the use of nasal endoscopy and CT scanning, and eventually taking a swab or a biopsy, may not be sufficient to fully appreciate the individual patient's pathology. Endotyping of chronic rhinosinusitis on the basis of pathomechanisms, functionally and pathologically ...

Incidence and features of eosinophilic esophagitis in dysphagia: a prospective observational study.
CONCLUSIONS: EoE occurs in an adult dysphagic population in New Zealand with similar frequency to that reported in Europe and North America. Demographics and features of history associated with EoE are described and the need to take esophageal biopsies in this population emphasized by the relatively low sensitivity of endoscopic features for the condition. Feeding Felix: overcoming an early onset of Crohn’s disease
Felix At just 3-months-old, Felix’s stool was regularly showing traces of blood. Alarmed, his mother Jessica Hsu quickly brought her young son to see his pediatrician, who referred Felix to be seen by Boston Children’s Hospital pediatric gastroenterologist Athos Bousvaros, MD, MPH. Gastrointestinal bleeding in infants is a fairly common problem, often the result of a change in diet or possibly a food allergy. Because Felix was still in the nursing stage, Bousvaros had Jessica remove some potential allergy triggers from her diet to keep traces of them from eventually ending up in her breast milk, and in turn, i...

Diagnosis of allergic rhinitis: inter‐rater reliability and predictive value of nasal endoscopic examination: a prospective observational study
ConclusionsPatient symptoms and nasal endoscopy findings do not provide reliable diagnosis of allergic rhinitis. Turbinate color and hypertrophy are believed to be related to allergic rhinitis; however, these were subject to marked inter‐rater variability in this study. This article is protected by copyright. Teaching and assessing endoscopic sinus surgery skills on a validated low‐cost task trainer
Conclusions:The sinus surgery task trainer provides an effective means of teaching and evaluating nasal endoscopy and basic sinus surgery skills for novice surgeons. With repeated practice, there was significant improvement in performance. An OSATS using the sinus surgery task trainer suggests that we can effectively measure endoscopic sinus surgery ability with the potential to reliably determine competency outside the operating room.
