Factors Contributing to Accumulation of < sup > 210 < /sup > Po in Freshwater Fishes in Dong Thai Lake, Vietnam and Radiological Hazard Assessment
This study determined by alpha spectrometry the 210Po activity in sixteen selected fish species with different living behaviors (pelagic, demersal), trophic positions (herbivores, carnivores, omnivorous), and masses in Dong Thai Lake, Hanoi, Vietnam. The min, max, and average of the 210Po concentration of sixteen fish species were 0.80 ± 0.44, 12.7 ± 0.20, and 3.54 ± 0.31 Bq kg-1, respectively. Regarding the different living behaviors, trophic positions, and masses, the results showed trending of 210Popelagic > 210Podemersal; 210Poherbivores < 210Pocarnivores < 210Poomnivorous and 210Po<0.2 kg > 210Po0.2-...

Exhaustive exercise alters native and site-specific H < sub > 2 < /sub > O < sub > 2 < /sub > emission in red and white skeletal muscle mitochondria
Free Radic Biol Med. 2023 Sep 18:S0891-5849(23)00642-1. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2023.09.018. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis is intricately linked to energy conversion reactions and entails regulation of the mechanisms of ROS production and removal. However, there is limited understanding of how energy demand modulates ROS balance. Skeletal muscle experiences a wide range of energy demand depending on the intensity and duration of exercise and therefore is an excellent model to probe the effect of altered energy demand on mitochondrial ROS production. Because in mo...

A Parasitological Examination on Aquarium Fish Sold in Petshops in K ırıkkale
CONCLUSION: The importance of the present study is that highest number of parasite species were detected in aquarium fish sold in pet shops in Türkiye. The aquarium owners should pay attention to the cleanliness of the aquarium water in order to reduce the rate of parasitic infection in fish; when new fish are purchased, they should be taken from reliable sources, and the quarantine process should be observed.PMID:37724365 | DOI:10.4274/tpd.galenos.2023.94840

The importance of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids as high-quality food in freshwater ecosystems with implications of global change
Biol Rev Camb Philos Soc. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1111/brv.13017. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTraditionally, trophic ecology research on aquatic ecosystems has focused more on the quantity of dietary energy flow within food webs rather than food quality and its effects on organisms at various trophic levels. Recent studies emphasize that food quality is central to consumer growth and reproduction, and the importance of food quality for aquatic ecosystems has become increasingly well recognized. It is timely to synthesise these findings and identify potential future research directions. We conducted a systematic review of om...

Impacts of Some Trace Metals in Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus,  1758) and Tor soro (Valenciennes, 1842) on Human Health
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03852-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough fish are rich sources of various trace metals in their bodies, when these metals exceed health safety limits, it becomes a global concern. Fish exposed to trace metal pollution in their aquatic ecosystems can lead to bioaccumulation and transfer to consumers. Monitoring trace metal contamination of fish food is crucial because they can reach humans through the aquatic food chain, resulting in health problems. Therefore, a first attempt was made for the analysis of trace metals in two cyprinid fish species, namely Cypri...

LINC00668 promoted non-small lung cancer progression by miR-518c-3p/TRIP4 axis
CONCLUSIONS: LINC00668 acted as an oncogene in NSCLC progression through miR-518c-3p/TRIP4 axis. Our study disclosed a new mechanism of LINC00668 functioned in NSCLC and may give a deeper insight of the targeted therapy of NSCLC in the future.PMID:37718780 | DOI:10.3233/CBM-230154

Climbazole causes cell apoptosis and lipidosis in the liver of grass carp
In this study, grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and liver cell lines (L8824 cells) were treated with climbazole at concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 20 μg/L for 42 days in vivo and 24 h in vitro to evaluate the effects on the liver, respectively. Pathological, biochemical, and gene transcription and expression analyses were conducted to examine the hepatotoxicity. Our results showed that climbazole significantly decreased the hepatosomatic index, caused cell apoptosis in vivo and in vitro, and finally accumulated lipids in the liver. Beside, climbazole increased ROS levels, reduced Nrf2 and Keap1 mRNA and protein lev...

Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress contribute to cross-generational toxicity of benzo(a)pyrene in Danio rerio
This study evaluated the role of mitochondria, which are maternally inherited, in the cross-generational toxicity of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), a model PAH and known mitochondrial toxicant. Mature female zebrafish (F0) were fed diets containing 0, 12.5, 125, or 1250 μg BaP/g at a feed rate of 1% body weight twice/day for 21 days. These females were bred with unexposed males, and the embryos (F1) were collected for subsequent analyses. Maternally-exposed embryos exhibited altered mitochondrial function and metabolic partitioning (i.e. the portion of respiration attributable to different cellular processes), as evidenced by in v...

Discretionary foods and drinks in Norwegian children and adolescents' diet: Data from the national dietary survey Ungkost 3
CONCLUSIONS: Almost all 4th and 8th graders in Norway consumed discretionary foods and drinks and these products contributed to a substantial proportion of the total energy intake and limited amounts of nutrients. Those children and adolescents consuming the least discretionary foods and drinks had a higher intake of whole grains, fish and seafood, indicating healthier and more sustainable food habits.PMID:37721223 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023001982
