Prevalence of Asthma Symptoms in 13-14-Year-Old Adolescents in Karaj
This study was designed to assess the prevalence of asthma in 13-14-year-old adolescents in Karaj, Alborz province in Iran, using the international study of asthma and allergies in childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire. Totally 950 adolescents attending 40 schools located in 4 regions of Karaj city were enrolled in the survey. The Persian version of the ISAAC questionnaire was filled by 13-14-year-old students. Multi-stage clustered random sampling was used to divide the city of Karaj into four educational districts. Emergency Epinephrine Use for Food Allergy Reactions in Chicago Public Schools
Conclusions Chicago Public Schools is the first large, urban school district in the U.S. to develop and implement the District-Issued Emergency Epinephrine Initiative, which helped 38 students and staff avoid potential morbidity and mortality. Eucalyptus Pollen Allergy and Asthma in Children: A Cross-Sectional Study in South-East Queensland, Australia
Conclusions The results support the hypothesis that proximity to Myrtaceae vegetation is related to positive SPT response and that Eucalyptus is an important allergen for children with asthma. Substantial response to olive allergen, in the absence of olive trees, suggests that the response may be driven by substances in other plants, perhaps Melaleuca quinquenervia, which abounds in coastal areas. Anaphylaxis and epinephrine in North Carolina public schools
Between 1 and 2 students in every classroom is at risk for anaphylaxis from food ingestion or insect stings.1,2 The prevalence of pediatric food allergy, in particular, has increased significantly.1 Although most reactions in children occur at home, harrowing accounts of fatalities in schools3,4 highlight the need for advance preparation. Early studies found that a significant number of school-related anaphylactic reactions occur in individuals without a history of allergy5,6; consequently, school districts across the country have begun to supply stock epinephrine.
