Medical education on a collision course: sooner rather than later?
Abstract BACKGROUND: The escalating cost of medical education does not have transparency. This results in high percentages of medical students with progressively rising levels of indebtedness that are only exceeded by the increases in tuition. Indebtedness is a factor in specialty choice along with the "business" of medicine that reimburses procedural-based physicians much more than cognitive primary care-based services. In response to perceived increased physician demand by 2025, medical schools have increased enrollments, and new schools are online or in development. Despite the inevitable increase in medical gr...

Numbers of MD and DO Graduates in Graduate Medical Education Programs Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Osteopathic Association
Conclusions: These data provide the first comprehensive accounting of the numbers of individuals in U.S. GME, in both ACGME- and AOA-accredited residencies. The number of graduates from U.S. medical schools is increasing rapidly; residency positions are growing more slowly. The planned unified accreditation of U.S. GME may cause significant changes in the patterns of GME for future trainees.

Longitudinal PBL in Undergraduate Medical Education Develops Lifelong-Learning Habits and Clinical Competencies in Social Aspects.
Abstract Problem-based learning (PBL) is popular in medical education in Japan. We wished to understand the influence of PBL on the clinical competence of medical residents, using self-assessment and observer assessment. Tokyo Women's Medical University (TWMU) implemented PBL longitudinally (long-time) for four years, and on this basis we analyzed whether long-time PBL education is useful for clinical work. A self-assessment questionnaire was sent to junior and senior residents who were alumni of several schools, and an observation-based assessment questionnaire to senior doctors instructing them. Respondents were...

Patient safety room of horrors: a novel method to assess medical students and entering residents' ability to identify hazards of hospitalisation
Conclusions A simulation showcasing safety hazards was a feasible and effective way to introduce trainees to safety-focused content. Both students and interns had difficulty identifying common hazards of hospitalisation. Despite poor performance, learners appreciated the interactive experience and its clinical utility.

Private medical education in Germany.
This article aims to give an overview of the private medical training opportunities offered in Germany and to show differences compared to state funded German medical schools. The authors discuss the opportunities of private medical training as well as its challenges and risks. Basic principles concerning finances and quality assurance of national and international private medical training are provided. Competency-Based Medical Education in the Internal Medicine Clerkship: A Report From the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine Undergraduate Medical Education Task Force
As medical educators continue to redefine learning and assessment across the continuum, implementation of competency-based medical education in the undergraduate setting has become a focus of many medical schools. While standards of competency have been defined for the graduating student, there is no uniform approach for defining competency expectations for students during their core clerkship year. The authors describe the process by which an Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine task force developed a paradigm for competency-based assessment of students during their inpatient internal medicine (IM) clerkship. Building ...

Legitimizing Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI): Navigating Rationality in Undergraduate Medical Education
AbstractIn July of 2015, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) —the primary accrediting body for North American allopathic medical schools—formally advanced a model of “formative accreditation” by requiring that medical schools engage in “ongoing planning and continuous quality improvement processes that establish short and long-term programmatic goal s, result in the achievement of measurable outcomes that are used to improve programmatic quality, and ensure effective monitoring of the medical education program’s compliance with accreditation standards.”As these and parallel forces redefine under...

Medical students as service learners: opportunities, risks and recommendations.
Authors: Lalloo F, Hawkins N, Lindley R, Kumar S Abstract Service learning is a form of experiential education that is being implemented internationally within undergraduate primary care, with the potential to significantly enhance clinical practice whilst simultaneously facilitating medical students' learning. Though the benefits of service learning are widely acknowledged within the literature, there is little documentation of the associated challenges. Drawing on reflections from our own practice, and those of colleagues from a variety of institutions across the UK, we propose four key areas of risk associated w...
