A regional approach to unmet needs in anaphylaxis.
Authors: Minale P, Bignardi D, Troise C, Voltolini S, Dignetti P Abstract Allergic diseases are under-diagnosed and undertreated despite their wide prevalence, and particularly anaphylaxis is often under-estimated. Evidence-based anaphylaxis guidelines developed by principal allergy organizations agree on increased prevalence of anaphylaxis, especially in patients younger than 18 years (18-27,30): this trend highlights the need for actions on anaphylaxis management and prevention (3,4). Lack of prompt connection between emergency department and allergy unit after discharge, and of a dedicated ICD-9th identification...

Allergy and asthma medication use in home ‐dwelling U.S. older adults
ConclusionAllergy and asthma medication use is prevalent among older adults and driven mostly by history of asthma or COPD. Additional sociodemographic factors predict allergy (but not asthma) medication use. Further studies are needed to evaluate efficacy of these drugs in the elderly.

Health Disparities in Pediatric Food Allergy
CONCLUSION: Racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in food allergy among children in the United States are evident and negatively affect the outcomes of children with food allergies. Active efforts to decrease racial and socioeconomic disparities through education, research, and advocacy will be important to help improve health outcomes in food allergy for all children, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.PMID:35476967 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2022.04.022

Identification of peanuts and tree nuts: are allergists smarter than their patients?
CONCLUSION: It is important for allergists to educate peanut- and tree nut-allergic individuals and their guardians on the proper avoidance of peanuts and tree nuts. This includes education in the ability to identify peanuts and tree nuts. In addition, allergy and immunology fellows in training may benefit from education in proper peanut and tree nut identification. PMID: 24054364 [PubMed - in process]

Improving allergy management in the primary care network – a holistic approach
Abstract The incidence, prevalence and costs of allergy have increased substantially in recent decades in many parts of Europe. The dominant model of allergy care within Europe is at the moment specialist‐based. This model will become unsustainable and undeliverable with increasing disease prevalence. One solution to increase provision of allergy services is to diversify the providers. A new model for the provision of allergy care in the community with the general practitioner at the forefront is proposed. Pre‐ and postgraduate allergy education and training, implementation of pathways of care, allergy specialization a...

Teal Pumpkins Help Make Halloween Food Allergy-Friendly
DRACUT (CBS) — One in thirteen kids has a potentially life-threatening food allergy, which can make Halloween downright frightening. But this year, there’s a way to tell which homes are safe for all kids: Teal pumpkins. Instead of carving, pumpkins, Joan Powers and her kids – 5-year-old Jack and 4-year-old Tessa of Dracut, are painting their pumpkins. Teal is the color of food allergy awareness, something the Powers family knows a lot about. Jack is allergic to synthetic food dye — anything that has a color with a number after it. Tessa is allergic to shellfish. There’s not much to worry about with a shel...

The latex story.
Authors: Raulf M Abstract The milky sap of the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis is the source of the commercial production of natural rubber latex (NRL) devices, and also represents a source of potent allergenic proteins. NRL materials were introduced in the health care field in about 1840 with the advent of technical abilities to produce suitable and flexible NRL materials for medical products, especially gloves. In the late 1980s, with the increase of transmittable diseases, particularly HIV infection, the use of NRL gloves increased dramatically. During the 1990s, NRL emerged as a major cause of clinically relevan...

Prevalence and Predictors of Food Allergy in Canada: A Focus on Vulnerable Populations
Conclusion Analysis of our data suggests that individuals of low education and new Canadians self-report fewer allergies, which may be due to genetics, environment, lack of appropriate health care, or lack of awareness of allergies, which reduces self-report.
