Real-Life Clinical Use of Symbicort ® Maintenance and Reliever Therapy for Asthmatic Patients in Korea.
This study used an observational, multicenter, noninterventional, prospective, uncontrolled design for examining asthmatic patients prescribed SMART to assess the frequency and pattern of Symbicort® usage as a maintenance and reliever medication. The characteristics of patients showing signs of overuse (frequency of inhalation: 8 or more times per day) were also analyzed. Among the 1,518 patients analyzed, 1,292 (85.1%) completed the trial. The number of mean inhalations per day was 2.14±1.15; the number of patients who had at least 1 as needed usage (PRN) inhalation per day was 843 (55.5%); the mean frequency of PRN use...

Allergy terminology: Toward a common language and shared understanding
The practice of allergy centers on 4 main pillars, namely, patient education, allergen avoidance, pharmacological intervention, and immunotherapy. Central to all these interventions is the need for shared understanding between patients and doctors, which, in turn, relies on effective communication. Communication is, however, adversely affected by time constraints, language of communication, and the understanding of practitioners of the difficulties in communication and effective strategies to mitigate against them.

Extent of surgery in endoscopic transsphenoidal skull base approaches and the effects on sinonasal morbidity.
CONCLUSION: Sinonasal quality of life worsened after ETSS at 0-1 month follow-up but returned to preoperative levels at 2-4 months and remained at postoperative levels >5 months. Analysis of these data will allow us to educate our patients that the anticipated nasal morbidity after ETSS is usually only transient and should be expected to recover to preoperative levels. Association between Caregiver Exposure to Toxics during Pregnancy and Childhood-onset Asthma: A Case-control Study.
Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations between caregiver-reported use of medications, alcohol, cigarette and/or waterpipe (WP), and exposure to pesticides/detergents during pregnancy with childhood-onset asthma. The study design consisted of a case-control study, conducted between December 2015 and April 2016, recruited 1503 children, aged between 3-16 years old. A questionnaire assessed the sociodemographic characteristics (age, gender, education level of both parents), the family history of asthma, and other known risk factors of asthma (heating system at home, child history of recurrent...

Food Allergy-Related Anxiety and Quality of Life in Parents and Children Transitioning to School
Parental anxiety related to food allergy (FA) increases during their child ’s transition to school. We hypothesized that by educating parents about multiple facets of FA, parental anxiety will decrease resulting in improved quality of life (QOL) for parent and child. This is the first study to evaluate child anxiety in this age group.

Results of an asthma education program delivered via telemedicine in rural schools.
CONCLUSION: Although there was some evidence of behavior change among intervention participants, these changes were inadequate to overcome the significant morbidity experienced by this highly symptomatic rural, impoverished population. Future interventions should be designed with a multifaceted approach that considers caregiver engagement, distance barriers and inadequate access to asthma providers in rural regions. Contact dermatitis and patch testing for the allergist.
CONCLUSION: CD is a common inflammatory skin disease and should be suspected in patients presenting acute, subacute or chronic dermatitis. The gold standard for diagnosing allergic CD is PT. This article provides practical recommendations for the diagnosis and management of CD commonly seen by the allergist in their practice. PMID: 29522811 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Environmental exposure to peanut and the risk of an allergic reaction.
Abstract The purpose of this review is to detail the medical evidence surrounding such potential risk of reaction to peanut in public venues, focusing on educational settings and commercial aircraft, and to review the medical evidence and best-practices regarding potential risk mitigating strategies. The burden of allergic rhinitis and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis on adolescents: a literature review.
CONCLUSION: Although AR and ARC are sometimes perceived as trivial conditions, this review indicates that their impact on adolescent life is negative and far-reaching. It is critical that clinicians gain a greater understanding of the unique burden of AR and ARC in adolescents to ensure they receive prompt and appropriate care and treatment in order to improve clinical and academic outcomes. Recent advances in our understanding of the environment's role in allergy
A new Annals feature in 2018, “From the pages of AllergyWatch” is devoted to publishing synopses of Allergy and Asthma literature relevant to a topic of emphasis. These unbiased synopses and comments by our Editors have been previously printed in the AllergyWatch bimonthly newsletter, and it is our hope that presenting caref ully selected article summaries and comments in the Annals will serve as a valuable educational resource for practicing allergists.

The impact of patient autonomy on older adults with asthma.
CONCLUSION: Older asthmatic adults with a greater desire for involvement in decision making have a higher asthma related quality of life. Future studies with the intention to increase patient autonomy may help establish a causal relationship. PMID: 29730013 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Comparing Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ) and National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) Asthma Control Criteria.
CONCLUSION: Neither ACQ nor NAEPP appears to reliably predict lung function, while both measures reasonably associate with acute asthma exacerbation. The ACQ may be the superior measure in gauging the psychosocial impact of asthma control given its particularly strong associations with quality of life. Teaching Residents Frontal Sinus Anatomy Using a Novel 3-Dimensional Conceptualization Planning Software-Based Module.
Conclusion There is minimal literature on proven methods for teaching frontal sinus anatomy. Objectively, participants of the modified FSMC simulation training using new software improved their ability to recognize cells of the frontal recess on CT scans. They especially exhibited better localization of the frontal sinus drainage pathway. Subjectively, participants reported benefit from the course and felt they would be better surgeons.
