A comparison of medical education in Germany and the United States: from applying to medical school to the beginnings of residency.
Authors: Zavlin D, Jubbal KT, Noé JG, Gansbacher B Abstract Both Germany and the United States of America have a long tradition of science and medical excellence reaching back as far as the nineteenth century. The same tribute must be paid to the medical educational system in both countries. Despite significant initial similarities and cross-inspiration, the paths from enrolling in a medical university to graduating as a medical doctor in Germany and the US seem to have become much different. To fill a void in literature, the authors' objective therefore is to delineate both structures of medical education in an u...

Hospital-wide education committees and high-quality residency training
DiscussionFrom a  governance perspective, the position of hospital-wide education committees in the Netherlands is uniquely contributing to the call for institutional accountability for the quality of residency training. When implementing hospital-wide education committees, shared responsibility of the committees a nd the departments that actually provide residency training should be addressed. Although committees vary in the strategies they use to impact continuous quality improvement of residency training, they increasingly have the ability to undertake supporting actions and are working step by step to cont ribute to h...

National Survey on Canadian Undergraduate Medical Programs: The Decline of the Anatomical Sciences in Canadian Medical Education
AbstractThe anatomical sciences have always been regarded as an essential component of medical education. In Canada, the methodology and time dedicated to anatomy teaching are currently unknown. Two surveys were administered to course directors and discipline leaders to gain a comprehensive view of anatomical education in Canadian medical schools. Participants were queried about contact hours (classroom and laboratory), content delivery and assessment methods for gross anatomy, histology, and embryology. Twelve schools responded to both surveys, for an overall response rate of 64%. Overall, Canadian medical students spend ...

Student loan debt and financial education: a qualitative analysis of resident perceptions and implications for resident well-being
This study aims to examine residents' experiences financing their medical education and how these experiences influence well-being and attitudes toward financial education in residency. We recruited residents from a Southern California health system with residency programs in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Psychiatry. We contacted residents by email and text message to participate in semi-structured interviews. We conducted interviews from October 2020 to March 2021 and analyzed 59 resident interviews using reflexive thematic analysis. Among residents, 76% (45/59) had ≥ $200...

Training Tomorrow's Medical Education Leaders: Creating a General Pediatric Master Educator Fellowship
During the past decade, the need for proficient and inspiring clinician educators in pediatric graduate medical education has become increasingly critical with the evolving work hour changes and increasing content requirements in medical student, resident, and fellow training. General pediatrics divisions are mainly responsible for resident continuity clinics and provide a large percentage of the leadership and teaching for both residency programs and medical student clerkships, making training in education for these individuals essential. Traditionally, training in academic pediatric fellowships intensively focuses on res...

A New Pathway For Medical Education Reform Proposals
Physician education in the United States must change to meet the primary care needs of a rapidly transforming health care delivery system. Yet medical schools continue to produce a disproportionate number of hospital-based specialists through a high-cost, time-intensive educational model. In response, the American Osteopathic Association and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine established a blue-ribbon commission to recommend changes needed to prepare primary care physicians for the evolving system. The commission recommends that medical schools, in collaboration with their graduate medical educati...
