Survey Finds 2M US Teens Are Vaping Marijuana
A school-based survey shows nearly 1 in 11 U.S. students have used marijuana in electronic cigarettes, heightening concern about the new popularity of vaping among teens. E-cigarettes typically contain nicotine, but results published Monday mean 2.1 million middle and high school students have used them to get high. The devices are generally considered a less dangerous alternative to regular cigarettes, despite little research on their long-term effects including whether they help smokers quit. The rise in teenagers using them has alarmed health officials. Last week, the Food and Drug Administration gave the five largest e...

MPs call for multi-billion pound education cash boost
UNISON has welcomed MPs’ call for a “multi-billion pound cash injection” into education in England as highlighting “the true scale of the funding cuts to schools and colleges”. The call for the investment, together with a proper, long-term funding strategy, comes in a House of Commons education select committee report on education funding in England. Education in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is a devolved matter. UNISON and other education unions, as well as headteachers, have been warning about the effect of budget cuts by the Westminster government. The investigation by the Commons committee found that ...

Their using is dramatically increasing but it still co-exists with a traditional cigarette and hookah smoking. Further education unions   ‘ outraged ’ at pay offer
Trade unions representing staff in English further education colleges have slammed the decision by the Association of Colleges (AoC) to only offer a 1% pay increase to staff. In a joint pay claim submitted in October, the unions (UNISON, UCU, NEU, Unite and GMB) made clear that college staff had suffered a real-terms pay cut of 30% since 2009 with over 24,000 teaching staff leaving the sector.   This year colleges saw a significant £224m increase in funding, yet it is unclear what employers spent this on instead of investing in staff.   The unions believe that only full transparency into where the mo...

The potential of neuroscience for health sciences education: towards convergence of evidence and resisting seductive allure
AbstractSince emergence of the field ‘Educational Neuroscience’ (EN) in the late nineties of the previous century, a debate has emerged about the potential this field holds to influence teaching and learning in the classroom. By now, most agree that the original claims promising direct translations to teaching and learning were too strong. I argue here that research questions in (health professions) education require multi-methodological approaches, including neuroscience, while carefully weighing what (combination of) approaches are most suitable given a research question. Only through a multi-methodological approach ...

Strong earnings help Consort Medical recover from hit by delay in Mylan approval
Consort Medical (LON:CSRT) said the impending launch of a generic Advair inhaler by Mylan (NSDQ:MYL) represents a significant opportunity for its Bespak drug delivery device unit, but analysts were less impressed after the FDA delayed its decision date for asthma therapy to March 28, 2017. That pushed CSRT shares down -1.9% to a $1.35 (941 pence) close yesterday on the London Stock Exchange, but investors pushed the stock up 4.9% to a $1.41 (987p) close today after Consort said it doubled the top line in fiscal 2016. Sales were up 50% to $396.4 million (£276.9 million) and pretax earnings were $46.2 million (£32....

FDA Cautions Cancer Patients About Medical Marijuana
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a stern warning Wednesday to companies marketing medical marijuana to cure or inhibit cancer — including mesothelioma — and cautioned patients about unsubstantiated claims. The FDA sent warning letters to four particular companies, citing deceptive marketing in violation of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. “We don’t let companies market products that deliberately prey on sick people with baseless claims that their substance can shrink or cure cancer,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb in a press release Wednesday. “And we’re not going to look the o...
