Brain and Cognition for Addiction Medicine: From Prevention to Recovery Neural Substrates for Treatment of Psychostimulant-Induced Cognitive Deficits
Addiction to psychostimulants like cocaine, methamphetamine and nicotine poses a continuing medical and social challenge both in the United States and all over the world. Despite a desire to quit drug use, return to drug use after a period of abstinence is a common problem amongst individuals dependent on psychostimulants. Recovery for psychostimulant drug dependent individuals is particularly challenging because psychostimulant drugs induce significant changes in brain regions associated with cognitive functions leading to cognitive deficits. These cognitive deficits include impairments in learning/memory, poor decision m...

Drug-facilitated sexual assaults (DFSA): a serious underestimated issue.
CONCLUSIONS: Most of the substances involved in DFSA, with the exception of alcohol, are under international control and scheduled under the United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961 and the Convention on Psychotropic Substances of 1971. However, several psychotropic substances and antihistamines used in sexual assaults are still not under international control, allowing for trafficking, often via the Internet and courier. The absence of international control makes it difficult to obtain accurate data on the nature and the extent of the problem. PMID: 31858579 [PubMed - in process]

The Need for Nationwide Electronic Cigarette Smoking Cessation Curricula Across the Healthcare Spectrum
Am J Pharm Educ. 2021 Nov;85(10):8212. doi: 10.5688/ajpe8212. Epub 2021 Mar 12.ABSTRACTUsing electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) has become a stepping stone for smokers in their cessation of tobacco use. Students within Doctor of Pharmacy and other health care programs have expressed varying responses as to how likely they are to recommend ENDS based on their knowledge of these devices. Because the amount of education on these products provided by PharmD programs varies, one study shows student pharmacists were less likely to recommend the use of ENDS to current cigarette smokers. This commentary suggests why some ...

Adolescent risk perceptions of ENDS use: Room for change in tobacco education
Prev Med Rep. 2022 Jan 28;26:101719. doi: 10.1016/j.pmedr.2022.101719. eCollection 2022 Apr.ABSTRACTElectronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) have surpassed combustible cigarettes as the most commonly used tobacco product among U.S. middle and high school students, and research shows that youth do not perceive great risk of harm from regular ENDS use. FDA's public education campaigns help educate youth about the potential risks of using tobacco products and three separate experimental copy testing/ad testing studies (N = 1907) were conducted in support of the FDAs "The Real Cost" (TRC) Cigarette and ENDS Campaigns. These...

Caring for the health and well-being of our learners in medicine as critical actions toward high-quality care
AbstractA recent paper has focused on residents' poor lifestyle habits and their potential negative impact on patients' lifestyles. This commentary argues that there are even greater reasons to be concerned about the health and well-being of residents and medical students and the resultant effects on patients throughout the careers of these learners. There is a “hidden curriculum”, i.e., customs, rituals and norms of behavior, in medical education and in the training at the healthcare setting, often contradicts the formal curriculum and include messages that neglect the basic needs of the learners as well as the patien...

The differential impact of the 2000 Canadian Graphic Warning Label policy on smoking prevalence by sex and education: A Difference-In-Difference-In-Difference Model
CONCLUSIONS: The 2000 Canadian GWL policy reduced smoking prevalence overall, with similar reductions for males and females and across education levels. The impact of the Canadian GWLs in reducing smoking prevalence did not reduce differences by sex or education. Although beneficial for all smokers, GWLs may not serve to decrease existing disparities, especially those by socioeconomic status.IMPLICATIONS: Existing evidence shows that GWL implementation is associated with reductions in smoking prevalence. But there is limited evidence from past evaluation studies on whether the impact of GWLs on smoking prevalence differs b...

Britain to call for G8 action against spread of drug-resistant bacteria by clamping down on overuse of antibioticsBritain is to urge the G8 to take action against the spread of drug-resistant microbes as medical and veterinary experts warn that co-ordinated international action is needed to prevent soaring rates of potentially lethal infections turning into a public health catastrophe.David Willetts, the science minister, will propose far-reaching measures that would clamp down on the overuse of antibiotics by GPs and hospital doctors. He will also try to restrict usage on farms and fisheries, where the drugs are blended w...

Heterogeneity in the measurement and reporting of outcomes in studies of electronic cigarette use in adolescents, a systematic analysis of observational studies
We examined consistency between cross-sectional studies of conventional and electronic cigarette use among adolescents in terms of the measurement, analysis, and reporting of parameters.A systematic analysis was performed of cross-sectional studies of conventional and electronic cigarette use in adolescents, to identify measured and reported parameters. Studies were identified by searching the SCOPUS database in August 2015. Two reviewers independently selected relevant studies from the search and extracted data. 60 abstracts were identified; 31 papers were eligible for review (23 unique studies). Measured and reported par...

Role of e-cigarettes in the smoking cessation
Conclusion: So, e-cigarettes are low-effective as an independent component of the smoking cessation program. We do not recommend e-cigarettes as an independent method for the smoking cessation, because they have low clinical efficacy and high economic expenses.
