Psychiatric and medical adverse events for kidney transplant recipients with lithium induced kidney disease
Background: The purpose of this study is to describe post-transplant psychiatric and medical adverse events for kidney transplant (KT) recipients with a history of lithium induced kidney disease. According to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) as of January 2015 there have been 208 kidney transplantations done in the USA for this condition and 227 are currently waiting for a kidney. Considering the evidence that decompensated psychiatric conditions may interfere with post-transplant outcomes, there is a concern about the risk of post-transplant adverse events in this population.

Must-read: review of single-dose activated charcoal
wikipedia.org 4 out of 5 stars Activated charcoal for acute overdose: a reappraisal. Juurlink D. Br J Clin Pharmacol 2015 Sep 26 [Epub ahead of print] Abstract The British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology seems to be publishing a series of articles on basic management of the poisoned patient. Several weeks ago we reviewed (and highly recommended) Marco Sivilotti’s excellent discussion of flumazenil, naloxone and the coma cocktail. This current article looking at single-dose activated charcoal (SDAC) is similarly well done, and essential reading. The author points out that although most poisons bind to activated c...

How Psychotropic Drugs Are Used; an Explanatory Paradigm
Publication date: Available online 11 February 2016 Source:Journal of Medical Hypotheses and Ideas Author(s): F. Shaddel, M. Ghazirad, D. O’Leary, S. Banerjee Traditionally, two divergent approaches are used to explain the mechanism of action of psychotropic drugs. The dominant “Disease-centred” view emphasises the biochemical imbalance caused by ‘illnesses’. In contrast the “Drug-centred” view emphasises the psychoactive properties of these drugs and their ability to induce an ‘altered-state’ of mind. In this article we propose a new paradigm for classifying the therapeutic uses of psychotropic dru...

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome Associated with Lithium Toxicity.
Authors: Patil V, Gupta R, Verma R, Balhara YP Abstract Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) is an idiosyncratic and potentially life-threatening reaction to neuroleptic drugs. Lithium is a first-line mood stabilizer used in the treatment and prophylaxis of bipolar disorder. There are several case reports of lithium-associated NMS, but only when it was given in combination with antipsychotics. Therefore, the possibility of NMS being secondary to the antipsychotics could not be ruled out in those cases. Here we present a case of lithium-induced NMS in a patient who was not being treated concomitantly with any other ...

State-of-the-art review of lithium poisoning: almost a must-read
4 out of 5 stars Lithium Poisoning: State of the Art.  Baird-Gunning J et al. J Intensive Care Med 2016 Aug 11 [Epub ahead of print] Abstract This is a very good paper, the best comprehensive review I can remember reading on lithium. It is up to date, with 78 references as recent as 2015. A major reason I liked it so much is that the authors are quire frank about how much we don’t know, and resist giving, for instance, mandates about when to start hemodialysis based on lithium levels. This is a temptation that the authors of the recent ExTRIP review  succumbed to. Interestingly, the two papers share an author (So...
