A Middle East systematic review and meta-analysis of prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility pattern in MRSA Staphylococcus aureus isolated from patients with cystic fibrosis
CONCLUSION: Regarding a quite prevalence of S. aureus and an intermediate prevalence of MRSA in CF patients, preventive measures and health policies should be implemented in the Middle East area to prevent the spread of infections caused by MRSA strains in CF patients.PMID:35765068 | PMC:PMC9241286 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-022-00305-x

Prevalence of fluoroquinolone-resistant Salmonella serotypes in Iran: a meta-analysis.
Authors: Khademi F, Vaez H, Ghanbari F, Arzanlou M, Mohammadshahi J, Sahebkar A Abstract The present study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Salmonella serotypes, especially fluoroquinolone-resistant strains, recovered from clinical samples in Iran. A full electronic search using related keywords was conducted in Persian and English languages in ISI Web of Knowledge, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and the Scientific Information Database (SID) search engines to find papers published between 1983 and 1 July 2019. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 46 eligible ar...

Biomedical Response to Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Other Sexually Transmitted Infections in the US Military.
CONCLUSION: Continued monitoring of circulating resistance patterns on a global scale is critical for ensuring appropriate treatments are prescribed for service members that may be infected in the U.S. or while deployed. Domestic surveillance for gonococcal AMR within the Military Health System has indicated that resistance patterns, while variable, are not dramatically different from what is seen in U.S. civilian data. Global patterns of gonococcal AMR have been described through the establishment of a central DoD gonococcal reference laboratory and repository. This repository of global isolates provides a platform for fu...

Identification and management of Shigella infection in children with diarrhoea: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Publication date: December 2017 Source:The Lancet Global Health, Volume 5, Issue 12 Author(s): Kirkby D Tickell, Rebecca L Brander, Hannah E Atlas, Jeffrey M Pernica, Judd L Walson, Patricia B Pavlinac Background Shigella infections are a leading cause of diarrhoeal death among children in low-income and middle-income countries. WHO guidelines reserve antibiotics for treating children with dysentery. Reliance on dysentery for identification and management of Shigella infection might miss an opportunity to reduce Shigella-associated morbidity and mortality. We aimed to systematically review and evaluate Shigella-associated...

The prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Clostridium species in Iran: a meta-analysis.
Authors: Khademi F, Sahebkar A Abstract Clostridium species are ubiquitous and associated with various diseases in animals and humans. However, there is little knowledge about the prevalence of their resistance to antibiotics in Iran. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Clostridium species in Iran through a meta-analysis of eligible studies published up until December 2018. Fourteen articles on the drug resistance of Clostridium species in Iran were included in the current study following a search in PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases using relevant keyw...

The increasing antimicrobial resistance of < em > Shigella < /em > species among Iranian pediatrics: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Our findings revealed that ciprofloxacin is an effective drug for shigellosis in Iranian children. The substantially high prevalence estimation proposes that the first- and second-line treatments for shigellosis are the major threat to public health and active antibiotic treatment policies are essential.PMID:36794800 | DOI:10.1080/20477724.2023.2179451

Socioeconomic factors associated with antimicrobial resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli in Chilean hospitals (2008-2017).
Conclusion: Socioeconomic factors beyond health care and hospital settings may affect the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance. Preventing and controlling antimicrobial resistance requires efforts above and beyond reducing antibiotic consumption. PMID: 32973892 [PubMed]

Vaccination Is the Best Bet Against Drug-Resistant Superbugs — Experts
Experts encourage parents to vaccinate their children against typhoid to ensure that the child has access to clean drinking water. Credit: Zofeen Ebrahim/IPS By Zofeen EbrahimKARACHI, Jul 6 2023 (IPS) The first thing you notice about eight-month-old Manahil Zeeshan is how tiny she looks on the adult-size hospital bed at the government-run Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology (SICHN) in Korangi, a neighbourhood in Karachi. Her right foot is taped with a cannula, and she whimpers incessantly. “I have been in and out of the hospital for the last seven days,” said Uzma Mohammad, Zeeshan’s mom, with worry lines...

Hospital epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility of isolated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: a one-year retrospective study at a tertiary care center in Thailand.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of MRSA in our facility seemed to be comparatively low. Vancomycin is still an appropriate option for MRSA coverage since all S. aureus isolates in our center were sensitive to vancomycin. However, careful attention is warranted since one colonization isolate was VRSA. PMID: 32379543 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical characteristics of < em > Corynebacterium simulans < /em >
Nagoya J Med Sci. 2021 May;83(2):269-276. doi: 10.18999/nagjms.83.2.269.ABSTRACTCorynebacterium simulans was first reported in 2000. Its characteristics such as isolation frequency, specimen types, and antimicrobial susceptibilities are poorly understood, because identification is difficult using conventional methods. We performed a retrospective observational study of 13 and 317 strains of C. simulans and C. striatum, respectively, isolated from consecutive patients at Nagoya University Hospital from January 2017 to December 2018. We analyzed patients' backgrounds, types of specimens, and antimicrobial susceptibilities. A...
