Device-associated nosocomial infection rates and distribution of antimicrobial resistance in a medical-surgical intensive care unit in Turkey.
Abstract The aim of this study was to explore the rate of device-associated nosocomial infections (DANIs) and the distributions of causative agents and patterns of antibiotic resistance in the medical-surgical intensive care unit (ICU) over a 3-year period and to compare these rates with those reported by National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance System and International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium. A total of 1,798 patients were hospitalized in our ICU for 13,942 days, of which 309 patients had DANIs, indicating an overall infection rate of 22.1 per 1,000 ICU-days. The central line-associated bloods...

Pregnancy-associated asymptomatic bacteriuria and drug resistance
Conclusions Bacteriuria is frequent among pregnant women, which generates a need for routine urine culture screening. In this study, E. coli was the most predominant bacterial species identified followed by K. pneumonia. Furthermore, women in the 21–30-year-old group were at a higher risk of UTI. Erythromycin, co-trimoxazole and ciprofloxacin should not be empirically used as first-line drugs in the treatment of UTIs. Continuous local monitoring of resistance patterns is necessary to determine the appropriate empirical antimicrobial therapy.

Soft hydrogels interpenetrating silicone—A polymer network for drug‐releasing medical devices
Abstract Materials for the next generation of medical devices will require not only the mechanical stability of current devices, but must also possess other properties such as sustained release of drugs in a controlled manner over a prolonged period of time. This work focuses on creating such a sophisticated material by forming an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) material through modification of silicone elastomers with a poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA)‐based hydrogel. IPN materials with a PHEMA content in the range of 13%–38% (w/w) were synthesized by using carbon dioxide‐based solvent mixtures und...

The transferability of blaOXA-23 gene in multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
We examined 64, non-repetitive, Acinetobacter baumannii isolates collected in 2013 and 2014 from four different medical centres (two from Saudi Arabia and two from Egypt). All the isolates were resistant to ceftazidime and ciprofloxacin. The intI1 harbouring blaGES-11 and aac-6'-1b was detected in 19% (n=12) of the isolates. ISAba1 over-expression of blaADC gene was observed in 65% (n=42) of isolates. Of all the isolates 19% (n=12) had ISAba1 upstream of the blaOXA-51-like gene, 69% (n=44) carried the blaOXA-23 gene within the Tn2006 structure, 8% (n=5) had blaOXA-24-like gene and 9% (n=6) harboured either blaVIM-2 or blaN...

Septic arthritis in the temporomandibular joint
Conclusion: Septic Arthritis of the TMJ is a rare event with very specific clinical symptoms. Due to the low sensitivity of the computed tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging should be considered when computed tomography scan is negative for TMJ effusion.

Magnitude of Biofilm Formation and Antimicrobial Resistance Pattern of Bacteria Isolated from Urinary Catheterized Inpatients of Jimma University Medical Center, Southwest Ethiopia.
In conclusion, the majority of bacterial uropathogen isolates were Gram-negative, biofilm formers, and resistant to commonly prescribed antimicrobial agents. Relatively ciprofloxacin, nitrofurantoin, and amikacin were highly effective against most isolated bacteria. PMID: 30881456 [PubMed]
