Clinical and imaging predictors of dysphagia and swallowing ability recovery in acute ischemic stroke
ConclusionsInitial risk of aspiration was identified as risk factor for short-term and long-term dysphagia. Aphasia and larger WMH volume were revealed to be significant predictors for swallowing function recovery at 1  month. Right corona radiata was identified as an essential brain area for dysphagia.

E-187 Pipeline embolization stent for treatment of giant supraclinoid aneurysms: a case series
ConclusionThe Pipeline embolization device is a novel technique that can be utilized for treatment of giant cerebrovascular aneurysms with emerging evidence of immediate and long-term success. Further patient enrollment and clinical trials will be required to assess its efficacy in comparison to other endovascular and surgical approaches for the treatment of giant aneurysms.Disclosures M. Emotional facial palsy: an unusual and rarely explored neurological sign
AbstractThe anatomy of the cortico-bulbar tract that drives voluntary movements of mimic muscles is well described. Some cases of facial palsy with inverse automatic-voluntary dissociation (emotional facial palsy; EFP) are reported in the literature. These cases suggested a completely independent path of the fibers whose lesion results in EFP. We aimed to review the clinical reports of EFP available in the literature to characterize the anatomical aspect of the fibers whose lesion results in the isolated impairment of spontaneous smiling. Cortico-pontine fibers that control spontaneous smiling arise from the medial surface...

Moyamoya syndrome and stroke among pediatric sickle cell disease patients in Sudan: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Stroke is a common problem in Sudanese pediatric patients with sickle cell disease, with a very high frequency of Moyamoya vasculopathy among patients with stroke presentation. The burden of Moyamoya syndrome in Sudanese pediatric patients with sickle cell disease is underestimated due to the cost of the available screening and diagnostic tools.PMID:35734737 | PMC:PMC9206931 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2022.103815

Risk of serious adverse events after the BNT162b2, CoronaVac, and ChAdOx1 vaccines in Malaysia: A self-controlled case series study
CONCLUSION: This study shows acceptable safety profiles of COVID-19 vaccines among recipients of BNT162b2, CoronaVac, and ChAdOx1 vaccines. This information can be used together with effectiveness data for risk-benefit analysis of the vaccination program. Further surveillance with more data is required to assess AESIs following COVID-19 vaccination in short- and long-term.PMID:35667917 | PMC:PMC9163997 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2022.05.075

Post-varicella neurological complications: A preliminary observation from a tertiary care centre of Eastern India
Conclusion: Chickenpox is a common viral disease and most patients recover without any complication. Although rare, neurological complications following acute varicella infection may have myriad presentations ranging from lower motor neuron facial palsy to life-threatening encephalitis. Compared to other studies, varicella encephalitis and ataxia were not so common in our study group. Response to therapy was uniformly good except in the patients presenting with ataxia. Response was particularly good to central and peripheral demyelinating disorders.

Left ventricular free-wall rupture: An unusual presentation of non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis
Perfusion. 2022 May 16:2676591221092313. doi: 10.1177/02676591221092313. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNon-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) is a rare, often asymptomatic, condition. A 55-year-old woman presented with hemiparesis, facial palsy and chest pain. After urgent investigation, she was referred as a case of type A aortic dissection complicated by tamponade, myocardial infarction and stroke. Review of her imaging identified haemopericardium but no dissection, and emergency surgery proceeded considering her unstable condition. She underwent an emergency repair of left-ventricular free-wall rupture and excisio...

A rare cause of stroke in young children: minor head trauma associated with mineralising lenticulostriate angiopathy in three patients
Paediatr Int Child Health. 2022 Apr 26:1-5. doi: 10.1080/20469047.2022.2066386. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute basal ganglia infarct following minor head trauma in association with mineralisation of lenticulostriate arteries is an increasingly recognised entity in childhood stroke. Three cases with a classical history and phenotypical features of mineralising angiopathy are described. Case 1 was a 2-year-old girl who presented with acute onset hemiparesis with a same-side upper motor neuron (UMN)-type facial palsy following minor head trauma. Case 2 was a 14-month-old boy who presented with a left side hemiparesis and...
