Risk Stratification in a Tertiary Care Spine Centre: Comparison Between STarTBack and OSPRO-YF Screening Tools
CONCLUSIONS: STarTBack and OSPRO-YF are short screening tools with acceptable convergent and known-group construct validity and no floor or ceiling effect of their total score. Both tools could assist with the identification, evaluation, and management of psychological distress in patients presenting to tertiary care spine centres.PMID:37736380 | PMC:PMC10510560 | DOI:10.3138/ptc-2021-0026

Gender-specific results of the Dresden children and adolescents headache program DreKiP
We examined gender differences in the outpatient multimodal Dresden Child and Adolescent Headache Program DreKiP.METHODS: We treated 140 patients with primary headache in a 15-hour structured group program. At baseline (T0) and six (T1) and twelve months (T2) after the end of the program, data on headache-related limitation of daily activities (PedMIDAS) as well as headache frequency, intensity, and pain-related disability (P-PDI) were collected. Retrospectively, these data were analyzed separately for girls and boys.RESULTS: For 91 patients (9-19 years, median = 15; 71.4 % female) data were available for at least two meas...

Characteristics and Healthcare Spending of Persistently and Transiently High-cost Older Adults in South Korea
CONCLUSIONS: Medical risk factors contribute to high health care spending to some extent, but social risk factors may be a source of persistent high-cost status among older adults in South Korea.PMID:37735830 | DOI:10.3961/jpmph.23.270

Disability Evaluations As Moonlighting
Hello everyone! I am interested in moonlighting as a PGY-2, however my program has pretty much 0 opportunities to moonlight. I could try and go outside of the system, but to get my unrestricted license and DEA and everything else would cost like $2k so it would take probably 2 shifts for me to just break even. I had read someone else on here had done disability evaluations. He had rented out an office space on like a weekend and basically worked 12 hours and would book 2 per hour plus a few... Read more

Are Social Deprivation and Low Traditional Health Literacy Associated With Higher PROMIS CAT Completion in Orthopaedic Surgery?
CONCLUSION: Within an urban, socioeconomically diverse, orthopaedic patient population, health literacy was associated with PROMIS CAT questionnaire completion. Lower health literacy levels increased the likelihood of not completing any part of the assigned PROMIS CAT questionnaires. Additionally, patients completed PROMIS CAT without fully understanding the questions. This indicates that patient completion does not guarantee comprehension of the questions nor validity of their scores, even more so among patients with low health literacy. This is a substantive concern for fidelity of data gathered from PROMIS CAT.CLINICAL ...

Nutrition-associated health levels in persons with cancer: item response modelling based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health
CONCLUSIONS: The study constructed an evidence-based ICF scale for nutrition conditions in patients with cancer with 32-item and 2PLM for evaluating nutrition-associated health level in persons with cancer, including high validity and reliability.CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: The IRT model based on ICF provided a promising assessment tool to discriminate nutrition-associated health level of persons with cancer, and offered an auxiliary method for selecting rehabilitation intervention targets. This has the potential to lead to improved outcomes in cancer treatment and increased quality of life for cancer survivors.PMID:37...

Effects of pulmonary rehabilitation in survivors of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Role of vaccination
Monaldi Arch Chest Dis. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.4081/monaldi.2023.2738. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSurvivors of severe COVID-19 requiring hospital admission may suffer from short- and long-term sequelae, including disability and reduced physical performance. Vaccination and pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) are effective tools against COVID-19 effects. While the beneficial effect of each of these treatments is known, there are no data about their combined effect. In people admitted to PR hospitals after severe COVID-19 disease, we retrospectively analyzed whether PR outcome might be influenced by vaccination status. Ninety-six...

Current practice of outpatient rehabilitation services in patients with mobility-impaired paralysis due to stroke or spinal cord injury: a qualitative interview study in Germany
CONCLUSION: Areas of improvement identified focused on: setting rehabilitation goals towards participation, training therapists on evidence-based treatments and shared decision-making, updating the outpatient service catalogue, and implementing coordination actions. Implementation of these recommendations should be evaluated.PMID:37732606 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2023.2259301

The experience of falls and fall risk during the subacute phase of spinal cord injury: a mixed methods study
Conclusions: The findings highlight the need for fall prevention initiatives during subacute SCI, when individuals are learning to manage their increased fall risk.PMID:37732508 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2023.2259311

A cross-sectional study of multidimensional fatigue in biologic-treated rheumatoid arthritis: which variables play a role?
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that effectively addressing fatigue in RA patients requires an individualized approach. This approach should acknowledge the varying degrees of fatigue across different fatigue dimensions (physical or mental), while also taking into account the patient's mental health problems, pain levels, and disability levels.PMID:37731384 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2023.2258333

Quality of life following non-dysvascular lower limb amputation is contextualized through occupations: a qualitative study
CONCLUSION: The findings from this work can be leveraged by clinicians and researchers alike to improve care for this population. Rehabilitation programs should consider interventions and programming that help to restore occupations or develop new ones given the importance placed on occupations by persons with non-dysvascular LLA.PMID:37731381 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2023.2258340

A novel < em > METTL5 < /em > variant disrupting a donor splice site leads to primary microcephaly-related intellectual disability in an Iranian family: clinical features and literature review
In this study, due to the genetic heterogeneity of the disease, the whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed on a 13-year-old boy suffering from microcephaly. In addition, Sanger sequencing, cosegregation analysis, and structural modelling were performed to identify and verify the causative variant in the proband and obligate carriers in the family. WES revealed a novel, homozygote 10-bp deletion in the donor splice site of 2nd exon of METTL5 gene (NM_014168:c.223_224?8del), which was found segregating with the phenotype in the pedigree. This variant meets the criteria of being pathogenic according to the American Colleg...

Motivation-related influences on fNIRS signals during walking exercise: a permutation entropy approach
This study provides early evidence to suggest that while different motivational environments during walking activity influence the magnitude of fNIRS signals, they may not influence the regularity of cortical signals. However, the magnitude of PE difference between motivational conditions was related to self-determined motivation in the aPFC, and this is an area warranting further investigation.PMID:37733031 | DOI:10.1007/s00221-023-06707-5
