Racial differences and disability after stroke
In their article "Racial differences in disability after stroke: Results from a nationwide study," Burke and colleagues1 tried to better understand how race might affect recovery after a stroke. The problem of stroke is large: about 7,000,000 people in the United States are survivors of stroke. That number is getting bigger. Stroke is a problem that mainly affects older individuals. As the US population ages, there will be more people at risk for stroke. In addition, modern medical care has reduced the risk of dying from a stroke, meaning that there will be more survivors of this serious medical illness.

Quality of Life after Intra-arterial Therapy for Acute Ischemic Stroke
Few data exist about health-related quality of life outcomes after intra-arterial therapy (IAT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We assessed stroke-specific quality of life (SS-QOL) in survivors of stroke after IAT. Consecutive patients undergoing IAT for AIS from 2005 to 2010 were retrospectively identified via an institutional database. SS-QOL (using the SS-QOL score) and disability status (modified Rankin Scale [mRS]) were prospectively assessed via mailed questionnaire. We analyzed quality of life (QOL) scores by domain and summary score, with a summary score of 4 or more defined as a good outcome. Analysis of variance...

Web-based tool for dynamic functional outcome after acute ischemic stroke and comparison with existing models
Background: Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is one of the leading causes of death and adult disability worldwide. In the present study, we aimed to develop a web-based risk model for predicting dynamic functional status at discharge, 3-month, 6-month, and 1-year after acute ischemic stroke (Dynamic Functional Status after Acute Ischemic Stroke, DFS-AIS). Methods: The DFS-AIS was developed based on the China National Stroke Registry (CNSR), in which eligible patients were randomly divided into derivation (60%) and validation (40%) cohorts. Good functional outcome was defined as modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score???2 at discharge...

Stroke incidence and case‐fatality among Indigenous and non‐Indigenous populations in the Northern Territory of Australia, 1999–2011
ConclusionsIn the Northern Territory, as elsewhere in Australia, Indigenous Australians are more likely than other Australians to suffer a stroke. Lack of falling in incidence in the Northern Territory population highlights the importance for ongoing comprehensive primary and acute care in reducing risk factors and managing stroke patients.

Quality of life in patients with TIA and minor ischemic stroke
Conclusions: Impairment in HRQOL is common at 3 months after MIS and TIA. Predictors of impaired HRQOL include age, index stroke severity, and recurrent stroke. Future studies should include HRQOL measures in outcome assessment, as these may be more sensitive to mild deficits than traditional disability scales.

Glycemic Variability and Functional Outcome After Acute Ischemic Stroke (P1.191)
Conclusions: An elevated GV on day 1 was significantly associated with worse functional outcome in patients with ischemic stroke. GV could be an important therapeutic target in the early management of acute ischemic stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Camara-Lemarroy has nothing to disclose. Dr. González-Moreno has nothing to disclose. Failing a Dysphagia Screening Test after Acute Ischemic Stroke: Baseline Patient Factors and Outcomes (P6.037)
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with ischemic stroke who failed a dysphagia screening test had worse pre-admission function and more severe strokes, and developed much higher rates of complications and death than those who passed. Multivariable analyses are pending to control for stroke severity and determine the strength of these associations.Disclosure: Dr. Joundi has nothing to disclose. Dr. Martino has nothing to disclose. Patient outcomes up to 15 years after stroke: survival, disability, quality of life, cognition and mental health
Conclusions One in five people live at least 15 years after a stroke and poor functional, cognitive and psychological outcomes affect a substantial proportion of these long-term survivors. As the global population of individuals with cardiovascular long-term conditions grows, research and health services will need to increasingly focus on preventing and managing the long-term consequences of stroke.

Neurovascular Unit as a Source of Ischemic Stroke Biomarkers —Limitations of Experimental Studies and Perspectives for Clinical Application
AbstractCerebral stroke, which is one of the most frequent causes of mortality and leading cause of disability in developed countries, often leads to devastating and irreversible brain damage. Neurological and neuroradiological diagnosis of stroke, especially in its acute phase, is frequently uncertain or inconclusive. This results in difficulties in identification of patients with poor prognosis or being at high risk for complications. It also makes difficult identification of these stroke patients who could benefit from more aggressive therapies. In contrary to the cardiovascular disease, no single biomarker is available...

Robotic Assessment of Upper Limb Function in a Nonhuman Primate Model of Chronic Stroke
AbstractStroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide and survivors are frequently left with long-term disabilities that diminish their autonomy and result in the need for chronic care. There is an urgent need for the development of therapies that improve stroke recovery, as well as accurate and quantitative tools to measure function. Nonhuman primates closely resemble humans in neuroanatomy and upper limb function and may be crucial in randomized pre-clinical trials for testing the efficacy of stroke therapies. To test the feasibility of robotic assessment of motor function in a NHP model of stroke, two cyno...
