What the Netflix Documentary ‘Bleeding Edge’ Gets Right About the Dangers of Medical Devices in America
A new Netflix Original documentary sheds light on a topic that’s opaque to many: the medical device industry in America. The film, called The Bleeding Edge, claims that the way medical devices make it to the U.S. market is lax and potentially dangerous. The filmmakers interview doctors and patients who say they’ve been personally harmed by an array of devices—including cobalt-based hip replacements, vaginal mesh and robotic surgery devices—and who feel that the guardian group of the medical device industry, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is not doing enough to protect them. It’...

Mifepristone followed by carboprost methylate suppositories was likelihood of the ideal medical scheme in early pregnancy loss. IUA decreased the complete expulsion rate of medical management, it is cautious about medical management for early pregnancy loss with risk of IUA.Trial Registration Number: ChiCTR2100046503. The transition from abortion to miscarriage to describe early pregnancy loss in British medical journals: a prescribed or natural lexical change?
In British medical research, the transition from abortion to miscarriage, to describe early pregnancy loss, occurred in the late twentieth century. A 1985 letter to The Lancet by a group of eminent obstetricians was long considered unilaterally to have prompted this shift. More recently, however, this conclusion was challenged, and it was suggested instead that the transition constituted natural language change, as medical professionals responded to their changing social and professional milieu. This paper, however, uses a pioneering statistical modelling technique to demonstrate decisively that the 1985 Lancet letter was ...

'Miscarriage or abortion?' Understanding the medical language of pregnancy loss in Britain; a historical perspective
Clinical language applied to early pregnancy loss changed in late twentieth century Britain when doctors consciously began using the term ‘miscarriage’ instead of ‘abortion’ to refer to this subject. Medical professionals at the time and since have claimed this change as an intuitive empathic response to women's experiences. However, a reading of medical journals and textbooks from the era reveals how the change in clinical language reflected legal, technological, professional and social developments. The shift in language is better understood in the context of these historical developments, rather ...

New Zealand needs guidelines for the safe and responsible inclusion of pregnant women in medical research.
Authors: Ballantyne AJ Abstract Pregnancy is a crucial window of time that influences long-term population health. As a matter of justice, pregnant woman are entitled to high quality, evidenced-based care. As a matter of population health, we need to better understand foetal development, particularly the impact of lifestyle, stress, chronic conditions and clinical treatment during pregnancy. Pregnancy continues to be dominated by the precautionary principle, advocating for the routine exclusion of pregnant women from medical research, particularly intervention studies, on the grounds of foetal vulnerability. But th...

Pregnancy as protest in interwar British women's writing: an antecedent alternative to Aldous Huxley's Brave New World
This article explores three earlier works—Charlotte Haldane's Man's World (1926), Vera Brittain's Halcyon, or the Future of Monogamy (1929), and Naomi Mitchison's Comments on Birth Control (1930)—in which pregnancy, instead of figuring as illness or debility, becomes a form of resistance to the status quo. These works engage with biomedicine, however, rather than abjuring it. Through a reading of these works, this article argues that the intersection of medical humanities and science fiction (SF) can enrich both: medical humanities can push SF to go beyond the canon, and SF can challenge any characterisation of...

Revisiting the Jewish Ethical Approach Toward Peripartum Cesarean Section in Light of Emerging Medical Evidence.
CONCLUSIONS: The Jewish perspective can guide medical personnel to modify and adapt the concrete rules to diverse clinical scenarios in light of current medical knowledge. With scientific data showing that both mother and fetus can prosper from immediate surgical extrication of the baby during resuscitation of the advanced pregnant woman, these morals should dictate training and practice in urgent perimortal cesarean sections whenever feasible. Comments on “Radiological protection for pregnant women at a large academic medical Cancer Center”
This letter refers to the Physica Medica article by Chu et al. entitled “Radiological protection for pregnant women at a large academic medical Cancer Center”, in which the data from the 245 declared pregnant woman (DPW) over more than 5 years (Jan 2010-May 2016) are presented [1]. The authors concluded that by implementing declared pregnancy and fetal assessment program, careful planning, understanding the risks, and reducing radiation dose by safety measures, pregnant medical staff can perform their normal activities without incurring significant risks to the fetus.
