Long-term Outcomes of Concomitant Surgical Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation
CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant atrial fibrillation ablation during cardiac surgery is safe, does not increase the rate of perioperative complications, and confers the benefit of long-term survival after cardiac surgery in adults. Atrial fibrillation ablation also improved cardiac surgery patients' long-term survival compared with the matched general atrial fibrillation population.PMID:36216085 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.09.036

Long-term outcomes of left atrial appendage occlusion in patients with atrial fibrillation and end stage renal disease
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term outcomes of LAAO therapy may be less favorable in patients with AF undergoing dialysis, possibly because of the poor condition of patients with ESRD.PMID:37394333 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2023.06.016

Effectiveness and safety of direct oral anticoagulants versus warfarin in patients with atrial fibrillation and advanced kidney disease
ConclusionAmong patients with AF and AKD, DOACs were linked to a lower risk of ischemic events, and apixaban was linked to a lower risk of any ischemia and any bleeding than warfarin.

Mortality prediction using CHADS2/CHA2DS2-VASc/R2CHADS2 scores in systolic heart failure patients with or without atrial fibrillation
This study analyzed data in the Taiwan Society of Cardiology—heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (TSOC-HFrEF) registry. These data were obtained by a prospective, multicenter, observational survey of patients treated at 21 medical centers in Taiwan after hospitalization for acute, pre-existing or new onset SHF from May, 2013 to October, 2014. During 1 year follow-up, 198 patients were lost follow-up, and final 1311 (86.8%) patients were included for further analysis. During the follow-up period, 250 (19%) patients died. Multivariate analysis revealed that body mass index, thyroid disorder, valvular surgery histo...

A novel algorithm for identifying risk factors for rare events: Predicting transient ischemic attack in young patients with low-risk atrial fibrillation
Publication date: Available online 6 November 2017 Source:Journal of Applied Biomedicine Author(s): Chieh-Yu Liu, Hui-Chun Chen Identification of risk factors for transient ischemic attack (TIA) is crucial for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, identifying risk factors in young patients with low-risk AF is difficult, because the incidence of TIA in such patients is very low, which would result in traditional multiple logistic regression not being able to successfully identify the risk factors in such patients. Therefore, a novel algorithm for identifying risk factors for TIA is necessary. We thus propose a n...

Health Care Costs and Utilization of Dabigatran Compared With Warfarin for Secondary Stroke Prevention in Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation: A Retrospective Population Study
Conclusions: The use of dabigatran is associated with lower emergency department and all-cause hospitalization costs but greater outpatient costs in a real-world, NVAF patient population compared with warfarin.

Statins reduce new-onset atrial fibrillation after acute myocardial infarction: A nationwide study
The objective of this study was to investigate whether statins confer a beneficial effect on AF after AMI. Data available in the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database on 32886 AMI patients between 2008 and 2011 were retrospectively analyzed. Total 27553 (83.8%) had complete 1-yr follow-up data. Cardiovascular outcomes were analyzed based on the baseline characteristics and AF type (existing, new-onset, or non-AF). AF groups had significantly higher incidence of heart failure (HF), stroke, all-cause death, and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular event (MACCE) after index AMI (all P

Oral Anticoagulants and Antiplatelet Agents in Atrial Fibrillation Patients with Concomitant Critical Limb Ischemia: A nationwide cohort study
ConclusionsDOAC was associated with a significantly lower risk of composite net-clinical-benefit outcome than either warfarin or APT in AF patients with concomitant CLI. Further prospective study is necessary to validate the findings in the future.
