Vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia post dose 2 ChAdOx1 nCoV19 vaccination: Less severe but remains a problem
CONCLUSIONS: VITT is a complication of dose 2 AZD1222 vaccination. Whilst clinicopathological features are less severe, fatalities occurred in patients with concomitant factors.PMID:37085453 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.03.071

Fulminant myocarditis following SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination rescued with venoarterial ECMO: A report of two cases
CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 vaccine-associated fulminant myocarditis has a high morbidity and mortality but presents a high potential for recovery. V-A ECMO should be established in cases with refractory cardiogenic shock during the acute phase.PMID:37075138 | DOI:10.1177/02676591231170480

Effect of Thromboprophylaxis on Clinical Outcomes After COVID-19 Hospitalization
CONCLUSION: The incidence of death or thromboembolism was low in this cohort of patients discharged after hospitalization with COVID-19. Because of early enrollment termination, the results were imprecise and the study was inconclusive.PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE: National Institutes of Health.PMID:36940444 | DOI:10.7326/M22-3350

TWiV 992: Clinical update with Dr. Daniel Griffin
In his weekly clinical update, Dr. Griffin discusses clearance of longstanding, immune-deficiency-associated, vaccine-derived poliovirus infection following remdesivir therapy for chronic SARS-CoV-2 infection, SARS-CoV-2 exposure in New York City rats, clinical characteristics and outcomes of children with SARS-CoV-2 infection during the Delta and Omicron variant-dominant periods in Korea, exhaled breath aerosol shedding of SARS-CoV-2 variants, outpatient treatment of COVID-19 and the development of long COVID over 10 months, Nirmatrelvir and the risk of post-acute sequelae of COVID-19, assessment of the risk of venous thr...

Distinct platelet crosstalk with adaptive and innate immune cells after adenoviral and mRNA vaccination against SARS-CoV-2
CONCLUSIONS: Platelets are a component of the innate immune pathways that promote the B-cell response after vaccination. Future studies on the platelet-immune crosstalk post-immunization will improve safety, efficacy, and strategic administration of next-generation vaccines.PMID:36918114 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtha.2023.03.003

Postmortem PF4 antibodies confirm a rare case of thrombosis thrombocytopenia syndrome associated with ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 anti-COVID vaccination
We report a case of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, bilateral adrenal hemorrhage, and thrombocytopenia in a 70-year-old man found dead. He had previously received the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine (Vaxzevria ®, AstraZeneca) 18 days before, and had since developed unspecific and undiagnosed characteristics of what proved to be a rare case of vaccine-associated thrombocytopenia with thrombosis syndrome (TTS). He was found dead 1 week after the beginning of symptoms (day 25 post-vaccine). Autopsy yielde d venous hemorrhagic infarction with the presence of thrombi within dural venous sinuses, and extensive hemorrhagic necrosis ...

Investigation of Neurological Complications after COVID-19 Vaccination: Report of the Clinical Scenarios and Review of the Literature
Vaccines (Basel). 2023 Feb 13;11(2):425. doi: 10.3390/vaccines11020425.ABSTRACTCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), broke out in 2019 and became a pandemic in 2020. Since then, vaccines have been approved to prevent severe illness. However, vaccines are associated with the risk of neurological complications ranging from mild to severe. Severe complications such as vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) associated with acute ischaemic stroke have been reported as rare complications post-COVID-19 vaccination. During the pandemic era, V...
