Lurasidone and risk of metabolic syndrome: results from short and long-term studies in patients with bipolar depression
CONCLUSIONS: This post hoc analysis found that both short and long-term treatment with lurasidone was associated with a relatively low risk for the development of MetS in patients with bipolar I disorder. These findings are consistent with similar analyses in patients with schizophrenia.PMID:36961124 | DOI:10.1017/S1092852923001190

Impact of lithium on mortality among older adults with major psychiatric disorders: A 5-year prospective multicenter study
CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that lithium may not be associated with all-cause or disease-related mortality and might be associated with reduced risk of suicide in this population. They argue against the underuse of lithium as compared with antiepileptics and atypical antipsychotics among older adults with mood disorders.PMID:36905630 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2023.2188172

Chronic Kidney Disease and Severe Mental Illness: Addressing Disparities in Access to Health Care and Health Outcomes
Clin J Am Soc Nephrol. 2022 Mar 31:CJN.15691221. doi: 10.2215/CJN.15691221. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIndividuals with severe mental illness, including conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, are at a higher risk of developing CKD. Higher incidences of CKD in this population can be partially explained by known risk factors, such as the use of lithium treatment and higher rates of cardiovascular disease. However, this does not fully explain the higher proportion of CKD in individuals with severe mental illness, and further research investigating the factors influencing disease onset and progression is nee...

Insight into susceptibility genes associated with bipolar disorder: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Future research should concentrate on molecular mechanisms by which genetic variants play a major role in BD. Supplemental research is needed to replicate the applicable results.PMID:34604962 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202109_26789

Lithium as a Neuroprotective Agent for Bipolar Disorder: An Overview
Cell Mol Neurobiol. 2021 Aug 6. doi: 10.1007/s10571-021-01129-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLithium (Li+) is a first option treatment for adult acute episodes of Bipolar Disorder (BD) and for the prophylaxis of new depressed or manic episodes. It is also the preferred choice as maintenance treatment. Numerous studies have shown morphological abnormalities in the brains of BD patients, suggesting that this highly heritable disorder may exhibit progressive and deleterious changes in brain structure. Since treatment with Li+ ameliorates these abnormalities, it has been postulated that Li+ is a neuroprotective agent in the ...

Should C-Reactive Protein and Troponin Be Monitored for Early Diagnosis of Clozapine Induced Myocarditis? An Assessment Within the Framework of Two Cases
Turk Psikiyatri Derg. 2021 Spring;32(1):56-60.ABSTRACTClozapine is an important treatment option in patients with treatmentresistant schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Clozapine has multiple systemic side effects with myocarditis and cardiomyopathy being considered as serious cardiovascular outcomes. Although the aetiology of myocarditis is still unknown, its frequent occurrence in the early stages of clozapine use suggests that type 1 drug hypersensivity may underlie. Although rare, the cardiovascular side effects can be lifethreatening and must be recognized and treated promptly. The nonspecific clinical presentation of...
