We Can Prevent Overdose Deaths If We Change How We Think About Them
I’ve been living in recovery from opioid use disorder for eight and a half years, and this might be a weird thing to say about addiction, but I feel lucky—like I dodged a bullet. I was addicted to opioids in Florida throughout the early 2000s, during the heyday of pill mills that flooded the streets with powerful pharmaceuticals like OxyContin. I say I’m lucky because this was just before the drug supply turned into a toxic sludge of potent fentanyl analogues, mysterious tranquilizers, and deadly counterfeit pills. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I were using today. The chances of my survival ...

Evaluation of the Painful Total Shoulder Arthroplasty
J Am Acad Orthop Surg. 2023 Feb 27. doi: 10.5435/JAAOS-D-22-01006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the overall success of anatomic and reverse total shoulder arthroplasties (aTSA and rTSA), some patients continue to have or develop pain postoperatively. As the number of shoulder arthroplasties continues to increase in the United States, it is important that surgeons are able to recognize, diagnose, and treat the various pathologies. Some painful etiologies are specific to either aTSA or rTSA, and others can occur with both implant types. Infections, stiffness, neurologic syndromes, polyethylene wear, aseptic implant ...

New Innovation to Address System Overload by Systemizing the Field Triage and Treatment of Non-Emergent Patients
Introductory Note from JEMS Editor Emeritus A.J. Heightman, MPA, EMT-P JEMS has prided itself on introducing countless groundbreaking concepts and innovations to the EMS community since its inception in 1980. As an example, in May 1980, JEMS introduced Jack Stout’s Public Utility Model and System Status management which changed the way many EMS Systems operated. His concepts introduced new ways to maximize resources and revenue through changes in the deployment of crews and resources. In Feb. of 1981, Dr. Jeff Clawson’s dispatch priority training and the Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS); the impact and des...

The American Registry for Migraine Research: Research Methods and Baseline Data for an Initial Patient Cohort.
CONCLUSIONS: ARMR is a source of real-world patient data, biospecimens, and brain neuroimaging data that provides comprehensive insight into patients with migraine and other headache types being seen in headache specialty clinics in the United States. ARMR data will allow for longitudinal and advanced analytics that are expected to lead to a better characterization of patient heterogeneity, healthcare resource utilization, identification of endophenotypes, factors that predict treatment outcomes and clinical course, and ultimately advance the field toward precision headache medicine. Qingpeng Ointment Ameliorates Inflammatory Responses and Dysregulation of Itch-Related Molecules for Its Antipruritic Effects in Experimental Allergic Contact Dermatitis
Conclusion Via a HPLC system and a BATMAN-TCM platform, for the first time we performed detailed HPLC fingerprint analysis and network pharmacology studies of QP ointment. By in-depth animal and molecular analysis, we identified a number of chronic dermatitis-associated Th1/2 cytokines, itch mediators, and cellular signaling pathways in the skin, DRG and serum for QP to treat the inflammation and chronic itch associated with ACD. Our data clearly suggested, upon stimulation, cytokines and itch-related mediators are released from the skin and neuronal tissues, and QP could effectively work on both the skin and sensory neur...

Drought in the Semiarid Region of Brazil: Exposure, Vulnerabilities and Health Impacts from the Perspectives of Local Actors
Conclusion The results obtained from this research shows, in general, the fragility in the social and political infrastructure necessary to improve the living conditions of populations, particularly those that depend on family agriculture in drought prone areas. The conditions of social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities presented in the region can be amplified by the drought process, and can aggravate the impacts resulting drought events, thus disadvantaging the population of this region, as shown in the Fig. 1. The general perception of the interviewees of the health sector shows an agreement with what is found...

The Most Commonly Treated Acupuncture Indications in the United States: A Cross-Sectional Study.
In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among 419 acupuncturists nation-wide to investigate the top 10 and top 99 acupuncture indications in private clinics in the United States. We found the top 10 indications to be: lower back pain, depression, anxiety, headache, arthritis, allergies, general pain, female infertility, insomnia, neck pain and frozen shoulder. Among the top 99 indications, pain represents the largest category; and mental health management, especially for mood disorders, is in greatest demand. The following popular groups are: immune system dysfunctions, gastrointestinal diseases, gynecology an...
