Medical Undergraduate Survey on Headache Education in Singapore: Knowledge, Perceptions, and Assessment of Unmet Needs
ConclusionsThe current medical undergraduate curriculum on headache disorders in Singapore may harbor significant unmet needs. A review of the syllabus to increase headache education may be one method to address this gap. Further studies in this area are required.

Simulation-Based Education in Acute and Chronic Pain Training
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe use of simulation-based education (SBE) in medical training has expanded greatly and has grown to include high fidelity and task simulation along with hybrid models using patient actors to enhance education and training of critical events as well as technical skills.Recent FindingsIn the field of anesthesiology, SBE has been particularly useful for crisis resource management and rare critical scenarios and new research into the use of SBE using task simulation for procedural skill development has been done highlighting the benefits to subspecialty procedural training.SummaryMedical simulation h...

Acupuncture for treatment of depressive disorders in pain diseases.
Abstract Therapy with acupuncture as a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is increasingly being used as an alternative or complementary method. The regular diagnostic processes and conventional therapies must primarily be applied as the basic principle of a treatment concept. In addition to a qualified education and training with recognition of the further qualification in acupuncture a continued medical education is required to treat patients. In the field of regular medical care diseases with the symptoms chronic low back pain, chronic low back pain with radicular symptoms radiating to the knee and ch...

Botulinum Toxin Type A and Rat Trigeminal Regions: The Search for Mechanism of Antinociceptive Action in Migraine and Other Headaches (S51.002)
CONCLUSIONS:Antinociceptive activity of BoNT/A in trigeminal region might be associated with prevention of CGRP release from dural nerve endings but involves endogenous opioid system as well. Cluster Headache - A Nationwide Study of 387 Cases (P3.062)
Conclusions: As expected, most sufferers were men, but with a male/female ratio smaller than previously reported. The proportion of chronic CH was higher than previously described. Some patients did not have strictly unilateral pain, and this possibility has recently been recognized, although not to the frequency found in our study. Delayed diagnosis was the norm, suggesting that continuous medical education on cluster headaches is necessary in order to relieve the incredible burden of these sufferers.Disclosure: Dr. Nobre De M Costa has nothing to disclose.

Headache Education Active ‐Waiting Directive: A Program to Enhance Well‐Being During Long Referral Wait Times
ConclusionsThe HEAD program, created to help manage lengthy appointment wait times, was associated with lowering migraine‐associated disability, decreasing ED visits, reducing medication and narcotic use and overuse. Education empowers patients to take an active role in their care, especially in regards to improving treatment timing and modifiable lifestyle behaviors. This education program can potentially play a role in early intervention for headache patients especially with chronic migraine and medication overuse headache.

Well-Being of Ambulatory Adults With Cerebral Palsy: Education, Employment, and Physical Function of a Cohort Who Received Specialized Pediatric Care
Discussion: This cohort of adults with CP had similar levels of education as the general population, but had relatively high rates of unemployment, caretaker need, and Social Security Disability Insurance utilization. Although chronic pain was frequent, the impact of pain on work and independent living did not exceed reports from a typically developing reference. Better targeted societal resources for adults with physical disabilities are urgently needed to allow equitable access to employment, promote opportunities for independence, and enable full participation in community life.

Effectiveness of education based on neuroscience in the treatment of musculoskeletal chronic pain.
CONCLUSION: Despite some evidence for a positive effect in the short and medium/long term, the heterogeneity in the technical aspects used does not allow the obtaining of conclusive results. PMID: 28650061 [PubMed - in process]

Opioid Usage in Peripheral Neuropathy: A Population-Based Study (P6.096)
CONCLUSIONS:Peripheral neuropathy is associated with higher opioid use. Greater chronic opioid use in those with PN may reflect the disease burden of chronic neuropathic pain, while greater acute opioid use may reflect a greater susceptibility for experiencing acute pain. These findings emphasize the importance of optimizing non-opioid therapy for PN patients to reduce opioid-related side effects, which can confer additional disability.Study Supported by:Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, Rochester Epidemiology Project, and the NIH (R01 AG034676, K08 NS065007-01A1, NS36797, K08 CA169443-02)Disclosure: Dr. ...

An observational retrospective/horizontal study to compare oxygen-ozone therapy and/or global postural re-education in complicated chronic low back pain.
Authors: Apuzzo D, Giotti C, Pasqualetti P, Ferrazza P, Soldati P, Zucco GM Abstract Acute low back pain (LBP) is the fifth most common reason for physician visits and about nine out of ten adults experience back pain at some point in their life. In a large number of patients LBP is associated with disc herniation (DH). Recently, oxygen-ozone (O2O3) therapy has been used successfully in the treatment of LBP, reducing pain after the failure of other conservative treatments. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of O2O3 therapy in back pain rehabilitation, comparing three groups of patients suffering from c...

Recognition of Chronic Migraine by Medicine Trainees: A Cross ‐Sectional Survey
ConclusionsDespite accurate individual recognition of episodic migraine and chronic tension‐type headache, participants were poor at recognizing that features of these primary headache disorders can co‐exist to comprise a uniform diagnosis of chronic migraine. Accurate diagnosis of chronic migraine was improved with use of a lumping strategy to the headache history.

What do eels teach about open access, medical education and professional ethics? The inception of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation in ancient Rome
Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) has been recently introduced as a minimally invasive treatment for chronic pain and/or spasticity-related conditions. The current indications for PNS span across a multitude of disorders such as axial back pain, occipital neuralgia, post-herpetic neuralgia, persistent low back pain following lumbar spine surgery, and refractory angina [1]. Interestingly, the inception of PNS can be traced back to Scribonius Largus, a physician serving the Roman Emperor Claudius in the 1st century AD.
