COVID-19 patients hospitalized after the fourth wave of the pandemic period in Vietnam: Clinical, laboratory, therapeutic features, and clinical outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: Severe and critical COVID-19 patients frequently have several comorbidities, multiple lung lesions along with a variety of clinical signs. Despite receiving antivirals, antibiotics, corticosteroids, anticoagulants, and even ECMO therapy, the patient encountered multiple complications, with a fatality rate of up to 38.27%.PMID:37574340 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2023.07.020

Impact of COVID vaccine and comorbidities in patients receiving casirivimab-imdevimab monoclonal antibody during SARS-CoV-2 B.1.617.2 (Delta) surge: A real-world study
CONCLUSION: COVID vaccination status and comorbidities are significant predictors of outcomes after casirivimab-imdevimab treatment. Despite having higher comorbidities, patients who were fully vaccinated at the time of casirivimab-imdevimab infusion had a lower length of hospitalization and reduced 28-day COVID ED visits or hospitalizations. Future trials should also compare outcomes based on the patient's vaccination status.PMID:37451874 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.07.011

Obesity as an independent risk factor for COVID-19 severity and mortality
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that obesity is an important independent prognostic factor in the setting of COVID-19. Consideration of obesity may inform the optimal management and allocation of limited resources in the care of COVID-19 patients.PMID:37222292 | PMC:PMC10207996 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD015201

Fight Aging! Newsletter, February 13th 2023
This study investigated whether taller Polish adults live longer than their shorter counterparts. Data on declared height were available from 848,860 individuals who died in the years 2004-2008 in Poland. To allow for the cohort effect, the Z-values were generated. Separately for both sexes, Pearson's r coefficients of correlation were calculated. Subsequently, one way ANOVA was performed. The correlation between adult height and longevity was negative and statistically significant in both men and women. After eliminating the effects of secular trends in height, the correlation was very weak (r = -0.0044 in men and ...

Influenza and pneumococcal vaccine prescription for adults during COVID-19 first wave in three regions of Argentina
The objective of this study was to describe the vaccination rates in volunteers from three regions of Argentina during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, 3853 adults were surveyed, 61.6 % were females, 45 % were aged between 40 and 60 and 18.6 % were > 60 years old. The commonest comorbidities were hypertension (12.9 %), dyslipidemia (8.5 %), and smokers or former smokers (9.2 %). The global influenza vaccination rate was 37.7 %, pneumococcal vaccination 24.7 %, and both 17.8 %. Multivariable regression showed that the vaccination rate increased with age and the presence of comorbidities. However, in the subgroup with indi...

Hospital mortality among COVID-19 patients - Experience of a multi-disciplinary tertiary care teaching hospital of Chhattisgarh in Central India
CONCLUSION: Mortality in COVID-19 patients was associated with advanced age, co-morbidities such as diabetes and hypertension, and delay in hospitalization. These are high-risk groups and should be vaccinated against COVID-19 on priority.PMID:36618226 | PMC:PMC9810947 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_584_22

Uptake of influenza, pneumococcal and herpes zoster vaccines among people with heart failure and atrial fibrillation
CONCLUSION: Multidisciplinary strategies are needed to improve access to vaccination, community knowledge, community engagement, and healthcare provider support to provide appropriate care to migrants and younger cardiac patients and reduce morbidity and mortality in this high-risk group.PMID:36379753 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2022.10.090

Conclusion Use of the Khavinson peptides and melatonin in combination in this way, at this dose, negatively impacts the thymus, producing a reduction in active tissue and increase in atrophy to fatty tissue. The degree to which this atrophy occurred is greater than one would expect to take place over nine months of aging at this stage of life. Why did this outcome occur, given the animal studies showing thymic regrowth, and the studies showing reduced later life mortality following use of thymogen? We can only speculate. Firstly, the dose makes the poison, and the dosing here may have been too high, too frequ...
