Treatment with betablockers is associated with higher grey-scale median in carotid plaques
Conclusions: These results suggest the use of standardized ultrasound techniques as an important tool in evaluating the effect of anti-atherosclerotic medications and underline the need of.further prospective randomized studies on larger patient cohorts in order to confirm these results.

Family History as a Risk Factor for Carotid Artery Stenosis Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Family history of stroke, and of CHD were each associated with CAS, suggesting that shared genetic and environmental factors contribute to the risk of CAS.

E-006 Familial Incidence of the Congenital Torcular Dural Arteriovenous Shunt
Purpose There are several hereditary disorders that are well known to be associated with arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) involving the central nervous system including Sturge-Weber, Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber, and Parkes-Weber syndromes as well as hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia and hereditary neurocutaneous angiomatosis. Furthermore, familial incidence of AVMs in the absence of congenital hereditary disorders also has been reported. Herein, we describe the occurrence of the giant torcular herophili (TH) dural arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in two pediatric cousins treated with endovascular embolization. Case report C...

Respirophasic carotid artery peak velocity variation as a predictor of fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated patients with coronary artery disease
Conclusions Doppler assessment of respirophasic Vpeak-CA seems to be a highly feasible and reliable method to predict fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated patients undergoing coronary revascularization. Clinical trial registration NCT 01836081.

Characterisation of factors associated with carotid stenosis in a population at high risk.
CONCLUSIONS. As forms of carotid atherosclerotic disease, moderate to severe stenosis is less frequent than a high burden of atherosclerotic plaques. Advanced age, smoking, dyslipidemia and hypertension are the main traditional risk factors associated with the degree of carotid stenosis. PMID: 24915030 [PubMed - in process]

Applanation Tonometry in Mice: A Novel Noninvasive Technique to Assess Pulse Wave Velocity and Arterial Stiffness Arterial Stiffness
Arterial stiffening is the root cause of a range of cardiovascular complications, including myocardial infarction, left ventricular hypertrophy, stroke, renal failure, dementia, and death, and a hallmark of the aging process. The most important in vivo parameter of arterial stiffness is pulse wave velocity (PWV). Clinically, PWV is determined noninvasively using applanation tonometry. Unlike the clinical value of arterial stiffness and PWV, techniques to determine PWV in mice are scarce. The only way to determine aortic PWV noninvasively in the mouse is by using ultrasound echo Doppler velocimetry. It is a fast, efficient,...

Exploring Carotid Sonographic Parameters Associated With Stroke Risk Among Hypertensive Stroke Patients Compared to Hypertensive Controls
Conclusions— Among hypertensive patients, the common carotid artery diameter and EDV are significantly associated with stroke risk. These findings have implications for development and evaluation of stroke prevention programs.

Influence of unilateral, asymptomatic severe carotid artery stenosis in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.
CONCLUSIONS: 1.Asymptomatic, unilateral severe carotid artery stenosis does not increase the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction and mortality within 30 days of coronary artery bypass grafting. 2.The presence of asymptomatic unilateral, severe carotid artery stenosis increases the risk of cardiovascular events during the first 12 months postoperatively. Stroke Risk Factors, Subtypes, and 30-Day Case Fatality in Abuja, Nigeria (P1.121)
CONCLUSIONS: Although hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and atrial fibrillation were important stroke risk factors, in many patients, these were detected only after a stroke. While the commonest stroke subtype was cerebral infarction, observed in almost two-third of patients, SAH was associated with the highest case-fatality rate at 30 days of 44.4%. Larger population-based studies are planned.Study Supported by: nilDisclosure: Dr. Bwala has nothing to disclose.

Amusia: Unique Presentation of Stroke (P6.261)
CONCLUSIONS:Even though music and speech are similar in principle and execution they are functions of different hemispheres of the brain. Unlike aphasia, anatomical localization of amusia has not been established but it is known that right non dominant hemisphere is concerned with musical ability. Impairment of musical ability in the presence of intact speech can be the only presenting finding in stroke. Their identification is the key to early and appropriate treatment.Study Supported by:NoneDisclosure: Dr. Ramchandani has nothing to disclose. Dr. Alsmaan has nothing to disclose. Ultrasound can identify pregnant woman with preeclampsia at risk for respiratory failure, study says
An ultrasound of the lungs could help doctors quickly determine if a pregnant woman with preeclampsia is at risk for respiratory failure, suggests preliminary research published in the April issue of Anesthesiology.About 60,000 women worldwide die as a result of preeclampsia, which causes severely high blood pressure. Potential complications include stroke, bleeding and excess fluid in the lungs - called pulmonary edema - which can lead to respiratory failure.

Renovascular hypertension: A report of 21 cases.
Abstract Renovascular hypertension (RVH) is among the most common forms of secondary hypertension. We studied 21 patients (eight male and 13 female) with RVH who were encountered during a period of 16 years. The average age of the patients was 34.75 years. Trans-renal Doppler ultrasound confirmed the diagnosis of renovascular stenosis (RAS) as the cause of RVH in 95% of the patients. Computed tomography angiography was performed in ten cases, which confirmed the diagnosis in all these cases. Magnetic resonance angiography was performed in only three patients. Renal scintigraphy was performed in 11 patients, with D...

Abstract 614: Premenopausal Women May Not Be Protected Against Early Vascular Disease In The Presence Of Diabetes. Poster Session II
CONCLUSION: In our population, diabetic women after age 40 should be considered at possibly high risk of cardiovascular events compared with a non-diabetic group. Direct assessment of atherosclerotic burden, such as TPA, should be used early in this population, even in the presence of menstrual cycles, instead of relying on traditional risk scores.

Abstract 615: Progression Of Atherosclerosis Plaque Area In Postmenopausal Women During Controlled Traditional Risk Factors Poster Session II
Conclusion, these results indicate that in the presence of controlled traditional risk factors, atherosclerosis may progress in some patients, including in menopausal women. Additional promoters of atherosclerosis should be evaluated in these progressive patients or possibly more intensive treatment should be used in such patients.
