Colchicine and high-intensity rosuvastatin in the treatment of non-critically ill patients hospitalised with COVID-19: a randomised clinical trial
Conclusions In this small, open-label, randomised trial of non-critically ill hospitalised patients with COVID-19, the combination of colchicine and rosuvastatin in addition to standard of care did not appear to reduce the risk of progression of COVID-19 disease or thromboembolic events, although the trial was underpowered due to a lower-than-expected event rate. The trial leveraged the power of electronic medical records for efficiency and improved follow-up and demonstrates the utility of incorporating electronic medical records into future trials. Trial registration NCT04472611.

MRI for all: Cheap portable scanners aim to revolutionize medical imaging
.news-article__hero--featured .parallax__element{ object-position: 47% 50%; -o-object-position: 47% 50%; } The patient, a man in his 70s with a shock of silver hair, lies in the neuro intensive care unit (neuro ICU) at Yale New Haven Hospital. Looking at him, you’d never know that a few days earlier a tumor was removed from his pituitary gland. The operation didn’t leave a mark because, as is standard, surgeons reached the tumor through his nose. He chats cheerfully with a pair of research associates who have come to check his progress with a new and potentially revolutionary device they are testing. The cylind...

Patterns of acute ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage in patients with COVID-19
In this study, we sought to investigate associations between neuroimaging findings with clinical, demographic, blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) parameters, pre-existing conditions and the severity of acute COVID-19.Materials and methodsRetrospective multicenter data retrieval from 10 university medical centers in Germany, Switzerland and Austria between February 2020 and September 2021. We included patients with COVID-19, acute neurological symptoms and cranial imaging. We collected demographics, neurological symptoms, COVID-19 severity, results of cranial imaging, blood and CSF parameters during the hospital stay.Resul...

Stroke profile and care during the COVID-19 pandemic: What changed and what did not? A prospective cohort from Joinville, Brazil
This study aims to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on stroke profile and care in Joinville, Brazil.MethodsA prospective population-based cohort enrolled the first-ever cerebrovascular events in Joinville, Brazil, and a comparative analyzes was conducted between the first 12 months following COVID-19 restrictions (starting March 2020) and the 12 months just before. Patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke had their profiles, incidences, subtypes, severity, access to reperfusion therapy, in-hospital stay, complementary investigation, and mortality compared.ResultsThe profiles of TIA/stroke patients...

Nomogram including indirect bilirubin for the prediction of post-stroke depression at 3 months after mild acute ischemic stroke onset
ConclusionThe prevalence of PSD seems equally high even if the ischemic stroke is mild, which calls for great concern from clinicians. In addition, our study found that a higher level of indirect bilirubin can lower the risk of PSD. This finding may provide a potential new approach to PSD treatment. Furthermore, the nomogram including bilirubin is convenient and practical to predict PSD after MAIS onset.

Vaccination, Acute Myocardial Infarction, and Ischemic Stroke After COVID-19 Infection
To the Editor We would like to highlight some key points about the recent article that reported that patients who received full vaccination against COVID-19 had a reduced risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and ischemic stroke after COVID-19 diagnosis.

Vaccination, Acute Myocardial Infarction, and Ischemic Stroke After COVID-19 Infection —Reply
In Reply We thank Dr Chu and colleagues for their comments about our Research Letter. Our analysis found that 2 doses of COVID-19 vaccine were associated with a reduced risk of AMI and ischemic stroke after COVID-19, using inverse probability treatment weighting to mitigate the imbalance in patient characteristics by vaccination status.

Cardiovascular Complications in Coronavirus Disease 2019-Pathogenesis and Management
Semin Respir Crit Care Med. 2023 Feb;44(1):21-34. doi: 10.1055/s-0042-1760096. Epub 2023 Jan 16.ABSTRACTThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a devastating impact on morbidity and mortality around the world. Severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 has a characteristic tropism for the cardiovascular system by entering the host cells and binding to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors, which are expressed in different cells, particularly endothelial cells. This endothelial injury is linked by a direct intracellular viral invasion leading to inflammation, microthrombosis, and angiogenesis. C...

CDC identifies possible ' safety concern ' for certain people receiving COVID vaccines
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that a preliminary COVID-19 vaccine "safety signal" has been identified and is investigating whether the Bivalent Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine creates an increased risk of ischemic stroke in people 65 and older. In the Friday statement, the CDC…#pfizerbiontech #foxnewsdigital #omicron #cdc #vsd #marcsiegel #medicaidservices #fda #pfizer #medicare

Original Article: Increased Stroke Severity and Mortality in Patients with SARS-CoV-2 Infection: An Analysis from the N3C Database
Studies from early in the COVID-19 pandemic showed that patients with ischemic stroke and concurrent SARS-CoV-2 infection had increased stroke severity. We aimed to test the hypothesis that this association persisted throughout the first year of the pandemic and that a similar increase in stroke severity was present in patients with hemorrhagic stroke.
