XANTUS-EL: A real-world, prospective, observational study of patients treated with rivaroxaban for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation in Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America
ConclusionsXANTUS-EL confirmed low stroke and major bleeding rates in patients with NVAF from EEMEA and Latin America. The population was younger but with more heart failure and hypertension than XANTUS; stroke/SE rate was similar but major bleeding lower.

Rapid Medical wins CE Mark for Tigertriever 13 stent retriever
Neurovascular device maker Rapid Medical said it won CE Mark approval in the European Union for its Tigertriever 13 stent retriever intended for treating ischemic stroke, and added that the first patient in the region has been treated with the device. The Israel-based company touted the Tigertriever 13 as the first-ever fully-visible stent retriever that can be adjusted by the physician to fit in the dimensions of the blocked blood vessel. Rapid Medical said that the device’s profile is 83% smaller than any other devices on the market, and that it is designed to recanalyze intracranial vessels of between 1mm and 2....

Stroke type and severity in patients with subclinical atrial fibrillation: An analysis from the Asymptomatic Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke Evaluation in Pacemaker Patients and the Atrial Fibrillation Reduction Atrial Pacing Trial (ASSERT)
Conclusions In patients with SCAF and stroke, SCAF seems probably causal in many cases; however, in more than 40%, it seems to be acting only as a risk marker.

Declining Rate and Severity of Hospitalized Stroke From 2004 to 2013 Clinical Sciences
Background and Purpose—Stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and disability. We assessed trends in rates of hospitalized stroke and stroke severity on admission in a prospective national registry of stroke from 2004 to 2013.Methods—All 6693 acute ischemic strokes and intracerebral hemorrhage in the National Acute Stroke Israeli participants ≥20 years old were included. Data were prospectively collected in 2004 (February–March), 2007 (March–April), 2010 (April–May), and 2013 (March–April). Rates of hospitalized stroke from 2004 to 2013 were studied using generalized linear models assuming a quasi-Poisson erro...

Positron Emission Tomography and Autoradiography Imaging of P-selectin Activation Using 68Ga-Fucoidan in Photothrombotic Stroke in Rats.
CONCLUSION: PET imaging using 68Ga-Fucoidan represents a valuable tool for assessing p-selectin activation in vivo and to discriminate ischemic stroke early after stroke onset. PMID: 29557745 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Perflow Medical closes $12m round to support Stream Net thrombectomy device
Israel-based neurovascular device developer Perflow Medical said it closed a $12 million round of financing to help support its Stream dynamic neuro-thrombectomy net designed for treating acute ischemic stroke. Funding from the round will support the European commercialization of the company’s first product, the Stream Net device, and a 510(k) submission to the FDA in pursuit of US approval. Funds will also help support development of two new products based off the company’s Cerebral Net technology platform for aneurysm neck bridging and flow diversion procedures. The Stream Net device is designed to treat acut...

Genome-wide and candidate gene approaches of clopidogrel efficacy using pharmacodynamic and clinical endpoints - Rationale and design of the International Clopidogrel Pharmacogenomics Consortium (ICPC)
Conclusion The ICPC aims to identify new loci influencing clopidogrel efficacy by using state-of-the-art genetic techniques in a large cohort of clopidogrel-treated patients in order to better understand the genetic basis of on-treatment response variability.

Detection of atrial fibrillation in patients with embolic stroke of undetermined source by prolonged monitoring with implantable loop recorders.
In conclusion, AF can be documented in approximately 25 % of patients with the diagnosis of ESUS after careful work-up within a year of monitoring by an ILR and daily remote interrogation. This had important therapeutic consequences (initiation of anticoagulation for secondary stroke prevention) in these patients. PMID: 28862284 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

E-025 The development of a pre-clinical stroke model for stent-retriever thrombectomy
Conclusion The development of a stroke model amendable to mechanical thrombectomy provides a potential paradigm to study neuroprotection strategies coupled with clinical standard-of-care endovascular treatment. Further reproducibility studies are underway. References . JNIS 2012;4:307–313. . Stroke 2015;46:1099–1106. . AJNR2012;33:353–358. Disclosures O. Brooks: None. R. King: None. J. Chueh: None. M. Worse Outcome in Patients with Acute Stroke and Atrial Fibrillation Following Thrombolysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests worse outcome in thrombolized patients with AF compared to non-AF stroke patients. Therefore, AF itself can be a poor prognostic factor for tPA sensitivity regarding the chance of revascularization and recovery after intravenous tPA. PMID: 28513116 [PubMed - in process]

Mortality, hospital days and expenditures attributable to ambient air pollution from particulate matter in Israel
ConclusionsSubject to the caveat that our estimates were based on a limited number of non-randomly sited stations exposure data. The mortality, morbidity and monetary burden of disease attributable to air pollution from particulate matter in Israel is of sufficient magnitude to warrant the consideration of and prioritisation of technological interventions that are available to reduce air pollution from industrial, power generating and vehicular sources. The accuracy of our burden estimates would be improved if more precise estimates of population exposure were to become available in the future.
