Predictive factors of subjective sleep quality and insomnia complaint in patients with stroke: implications for clinical practice.
Abstract The complaints regarding sleep problems have not been well identified after a stroke. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive factors of sleep quality and insomnia complaints in patients with stroke. A total of 70 subjects, 40 patients (57 ± 7 years) and 30 healthy controls (52 ± 6 years) assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Sleep Habits Questionnaire took part in the study. Sleep apnea common among stroke-related brainstem injuries
People whose brainstems are affected by their stroke have a significantly higher prevalence of sleep apnea than those who have stroke-related injury elsewhere in the brain, according to new research. Sleep apnea is marked by interrupted breathing during sleep and can lead to serious health problems including heart disease and stroke.

Poor sleep associated with increased risk of heart attack, stroke
Poor sleep is associated with increased risk of heart attack and stroke, according to results from a recent study. The study included a representative sample of 657 men aged 25 to 64 years with no history of heart attack, stroke or diabetes. In terms of sleep quality, very bad, bad or poor ratings were considered a sleeping disorder in the study. Cases of myocardial infarction and stroke were recorded over the next 14 years.

Severe sleep apnea linked to increased risk of stroke, cancer, death
Moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea is independently associated with an increased risk of stroke, cancer and death. Results of the 20-year follow-up study show that people with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea were four times more likely to die (hazard ratio = 4.2), nearly four times more likely to have a stroke (HR = 3.7), three times more likely to die from cancer (HR = 3.4), and 2.5 times more likely to develop cancer. Results were adjusted for potential confounding factors such as body mass index, smoking status, total cholesterol and blood pressure.

Ritalin and similar forms of ADHD medication may trigger abnormal heart rhythms and increase heart attack risk in some children soon after they start taking the drug, according to a new study.  This connection was especially true for children who were born with heart disease.
