The effect of sex and age on the comorbidity burden of OSA: an observational analysis from a large nationwide US health claims database.
Abstract Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a highly prevalent condition but studies exploring the burden of OSA-associated comorbidities have been limited by small sample sizes with underrepresentation of women. We queried the Truven Health MarketScan Research Databases 2003-2012, which is a collection of health insurance claims for working adults and retirees with employer-sponsored health insurance. Adults with a diagnostic code for OSA with at least 12 months of follow-up from the index date of OSA diagnosis were compared to a matched random sample. Comorbidities were assessed using International Classificatio...

Rivaroxaban in non valvular atrial fibrillation: subgroups analysis.
Authors: Greco C Abstract After the ROCKET AF study main paper several subgroups analysis were recently published. These studies are useful to better evaluate the rivaroxaban efficacy and safety in different clinical conditions. Here the subgroup analysis of patients with moderate renal failure, heart failure and diabetes are presented. Post hoc data on patients who underwent an electrical or pharmacological cardioversion during ROKET AF follow up were available and here we analyze also the results of the first randomized study on electrical cardioversion in patients treated with new oral anticolagulants: the X-VeR...

Thromboembolic and hemorrhagic risk stratification in patients with atrial fibrillation. Part I: the thromboembolic risk.
Authors: Abrignani MG, Colivicchi F Abstract Atrial fibrillation, whose prevalence is in constant increase, is associated to a noticeably greater thrombo-embolic risk. Various associated factors, such as older age, arterial hypertension, heart failure, previous cerebrovascular events (stroke and transient ischemic attacks), diabetes mellitus, female sex and vascular diseases determine a further increase of the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation. Robust evidence exists on the efficacy of traditional anticoagulant oral therapy in the prevention of thrombo-embolic risk in these patients, but fears and...

Unemployment in COPD: Results from the BOLD study
Conclusion: There was substantial variation in employment of COPD-patients, but the overall effect of COPD on unemployment was modest when we adjusted for geography, demographic factors and comorbidities.

Multimorbidity is a risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome in ageing
Conclusion: This study suggests that the coexistence of chronic comorbid diseases is associated with a higher risk for OSAHS in elderly primary care patients.

OSA complication score as novel reference to assess systemic inflammation in sleep apnoea
Breathing disorders during sleep increase the risk of many serious complications and pathophysiological abnormalities. The obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and related comorbidities are accompanied by systemic inflammation. In our conducting study on immune response in OSAS we observed significant changes related to comorbidities. Thus we constructed our own OSA complications score (OCS).The aim of our study was to assess the usefulness of this score in evaluation of character and severity of inflammation. OCS was calculated for 50 OSA patients by adding up the following factors: obesity, diabetes, hypertension, is...

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder in the population-a review on the epidemiology of sleep apnea.
Authors: Franklin KA, Lindberg E Abstract The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) defined at an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥5 was a mean of 22% (range, 9-37%) in men and 17% (range, 4-50%) in women in eleven published epidemiological studies published between 1993 and 2013. OSA with excessive daytime sleepiness occurred in 6% (range, 3-18%) of men and in 4% (range, 1-17%) of women. The prevalence increased with time and OSA was reported in 37% of men and in 50% of women in studies from 2008 and 2013 respectively. OSA is more prevalent in men than in women and increases with age and obesity. Smoking and al...

Metabolic diseases in parents and grandparents predict asthma and hay fever in offspring
Conclusion: This is the first study to show that familial cardio-metabolic disease predicts specific asthma phenotypes and hay fever, independent of familial asthma, suggesting that two distinct pathways carry asthma risk across generations, via familial asthma as well as cardio-metabolic disease.
