Effects of Statins on Early and Late Clinical Outcomes of Carotid Endarterectomy and the Rate of Post-Carotid Endarterectomy Restenosis
Statins have no effect on post-carotid endarterectomy (CEA) restenosis but are associated with decreased death rates in patients with diabetes trending to lower both death and stroke rates in diabetic patients with hypercholesterolemia.

Simultaneous coronary and carotid revascularisation
Conclusion According to our experiences and results, the simultaneous performance of CEA and CABG in patients with severe coexisting carotid artery disease who require coronary revascularization has proved to be a safe and efficacious operative strategy in these high-risk patients.

Outcomes of 1000 Carotid Wallstent Implantations: Single-Center Experience
Conclusion: CAS is a valid method for treating carotid artery disease, with very low rates of major adverse events and neurologic complications. The Carotid Wallstent seems to have excellent results, even with complex plaque morphology, and a low incidence of restenosis at follow-up.

High-grade carotid artery stenosis: A forgotten area in cardiovascular risk management
Conclusions The clinical event rate was high in patients with high-grade CAS and the management of cardiovascular risk was deficient in all aspects.

Diabetes Mellitus with Chronic Complications in Relation to Carotid Endarterectomy and Carotid Artery Stenting Outcomes
Carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery stenting are effective treatment procedures for carotid artery stenosis. Although diabetes mellitus is highly prevalent among patients undergoing these revascularization procedures, few studies have examined their impact on periprocedural outcomes.

Carotid Endarterectomy in Octogenarians and Nonagenarians: Is it Worth the Effort ?
CONCLUSIONS: Carotid endarterectomy can be performed in the elderly as safely and cost effectively as in the younger population. PMID: 27819579 [PubMed - in process]

Comparison of Early Outcomes and Restenosis Rate Between Carotid Endarterectomy and Carotid Artery Stenting Using Propensity Score Matching Analysis.
CONCLUSION: This PSM based observation reconfirmed previous trial results in both asymptomatic and symptomatic patients with carotid artery stenosis in routine clinical practice: CEA showed lower 30 day MACE and mid-term restenosis rates than CAS. PMID: 28893482 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Diabetes adversely affects phospholipid profiles in human carotid artery endarterectomy plaques Patient-Oriented and Epidemiological Research
Patients with diabetes are at higher risk of developing carotid artery stenosis and resultant stroke. Arachidonoyl phospholipids affect plaque inflammation and vulnerability, but whether diabetic patients have unique carotid artery phospholipidomic profiles is unknown. We performed a comprehensive paired analysis of phospholipids in extracranial carotid endarterectomy (CEA) plaques of matched diabetic and nondiabetic patients and analyzed mass spectrometry-derived profiles of three phospholipids, plasmenyl-phosphatidylethanolamine (pPE), phosphatidylserine (PS), and phosphatidylinositol (PI), in maximally (MAX) and minimal...

Glucose screening in pregnancy and future risk of cardiovascular disease in women: a retrospective, population-based cohort study
Publication date: Available online 27 March 2019Source: The Lancet Diabetes & EndocrinologyAuthor(s): Ravi Retnakaran, Baiju R ShahSummaryBackgroundIn studies to date, gestational diabetes has consistently been associated with an increased future risk of cardiovascular disease, irrespective of the antepartum screening protocol or diagnostic criteria by which gestational diabetes is diagnosed. We reasoned that the resultant heterogeneity in the severity of dysglycaemia in women with gestational diabetes suggests that the relationship between gestational glycaemia and subsequent cardiovascular disease probably extends into t...

Prognostic factors of long-term survival to guide selection of asymptomatic patients for carotid endarterectomy.
CONCLUSIONS: The presence of one or more prognostic factors as well as the various risk prediction models can guide selection of ACS patient subgroups for which a prophylactic CEA should or should not be offered. Decisions to offer prophylactic CEA should weigh in factors like surgeon's experience and hospital expertise/volume. Asymptomatic patients not expected to live long enough to benefit from the procedure should not be considered for CEA, but should be offered best medical treatment. Severe contralateral carotid stenosis or occlusion drive 30-day risk after carotid endarterectomy.
CONCLUSIONS: SCSO is an independent predictor of 30-day major adverse events. Whether these patients with SCSO are suitable for carotid endarterectomy should be carefully considered. PMID: 33596788 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Revised cardiac score index is a predictor of long-term outcomes after carotid endarterectomy
Conclusion: RCRI and CtRCRI did not predict MACE in the perioperative period but are good predictors of 30-day complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥2). Both RCRI and CtRCRI have good prognostic value as predictors of long-term cardiovascular events.PMID:35171024 | DOI:10.1024/0301-1526/a000988
