"The obesity pandemic" in the COVID-19 pandemic - new treatment for an old problem
This article provides a review of the literature on the recent worsening of obesity in the paediatric population, with particular emphasis on the importance of the COVID-19 pandemic. New methods of fighting obesity with the use of telemedicine and current methods of pharmacotherapy, including new drugs, are presented.PMID:37728462 | PMC:PMC10411083 | DOI:10.5114/pedm.2023.129342

Evaluation of safety and efficacy of allogeneic adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells in pediatric bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BoS) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT)
CONCLUSIONS: AT-MSCs could be safely administered to our pediatric cases with BoS post-allo-HSCT. Considering their advanced stage of disease, their sub-optimal functional capacity due to steroid-induced complications, and COVID-19 infection post-treatment, we believe that AT-MSC therapy can have possible efficacy in the management of pediatric BoS. The conduction of further studies with larger sample sizes and more frequent injections is prudent for further optimization of AT-MSC therapy against BoS. Temporal Changes in Energy-Balance Behaviors and Home Factors in Adolescents with Normal Weight and Those with Overweight or Obesity
This study aimed to examine the temporal changes in energy-balance behaviors and home factors in adolescents with normal weight and those with overweight or obesity (OWOB). Adolescents or parent proxies completed survey assessments two to four years before (T0; n=82), ≤ six months before (T1; n=68), and ≤ three months after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak (T2; n=82), to capture energy-balance behaviors (i.e., physical activity [PA], screen time, sleep) and home factors (i.e., food environment, food worry, parent support for PA). At T0 and T1 (before pandemic), participants visited our laboratory for anthropometric measu...

Mechanisms and pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection of the adipose tissue
Trends Endocrinol Metab. 2023 Sep 4:S1043-2760(23)00163-7. doi: 10.1016/j.tem.2023.08.010. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObesity is an independent risk factor for severe COVID-19, yet there remains a lack of consensus on the mechanisms underlying this relationship. A hypothesis that has garnered considerable attention suggests that SARS-CoV-2 disrupts adipose tissue function, either through direct infection or by indirect mechanisms. Indeed, recent reports have begun to shed some light on the important role that the adipose tissue plays during the acute phase of infection, as well as mediating long-term sequelae. In this r...

Coronavirus disease 2019 is associated with long-term depressive symptoms in Spanish older adults with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 was associated with long-term depression risk in older adults with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome, particularly in women. Thus, long-term evaluations of the impact of COVID-19 on mental health and preventive public health initiatives are warranted in older adults.PMID:37667630 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291723002313

A Case of a Highly Obese Covid-19 Patient with Severe Hypoxemia and Subcutaneous Mediastinal Emphysema Who Was Rescued by Early Introduction of ECMO
Kobe J Med Sci. 2023 Jul 27;69(2):E49-E51.ABSTRACTWe conducted the treatment of a highly obese patient with severe Covid-19 pneumonia who had a history of asthma. When she arrived at the hospital, she was already intubated and had mediastinal emphysema and severe hypoxemia. Because the patient's condition did not improve with mechanical ventilation, we introduced extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) immediately after admission. The patient improved with early induction of ECMO and prone positioning. In the management of patients with severe Covid-19 pneumonia, early introduction of ECMO should be considered if oxygen...
