Association and mediating mechanism between remnant cholesterol and first-ever stroke among the Chinese general population
CONCLUSION: High RC increased the risk of first-ever stroke in the Chinese general population without previous stroke and myocardial infarction, partially through the pathway of hypertension. RC might be a potential target for the primary prevention of stroke.PMID:37304024 | PMC:PMC10247974 | DOI:10.3389/fnins.2023.1161367

Chronic HCV infection is a risk factor of ischemic stroke
Conclusions: HCV infected patients are at higher and earlier risk of stroke. Inflammation is a key mediator. Clinicians in clinical practice and researchers in future trials should take into account these new findings.Highlights:

Sex differences in risk factors for coronary artery disease and stroke in men and women aged 45-65 years
Conclusions In a middle-aged population, CAD risk factor profiles differed between genders while stroke risk factor profiles did not.

Poor Adherence to Statin and Antihypertensive Therapies as Risk Factors for Fatal Stroke
ConclusionsIndividuals with hypercholesterolemia and hypertension who fail to take their prescribed statin and antihypertensive medication experience a substantially increased risk of fatal stroke. The risk is lower if the patient is adherent to either one of these therapies.

Cumulative Effects of LDL Cholesterol and CRP Levels on Recurrent Stroke and TIA.
CONCLUSIONS: The control of both LDL cholesterol and CRP levels appears to be effective for preventing recurrent stroke and TIA in patients with non-cardiogenic ischemic stroke. PMID: 30318492 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effect of Statin on Stroke Recurrence Prevention at Different Infarction Locations: A Post Hoc Analysis of The J-STARS Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Pravastatin significantly reduced the recurrence rate of all stroke among patients with PCS. Thus, the effect of statin on the recurrence of stroke may differ according to infarction location. PMID: 31554765 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Eicosapentaenoic-to-Arachidonic Acid Ratio Predicts Mortality and Recurrent Vascular Events in Ischemic Stroke Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Low EPA/AA ratio at baseline and treatment without statins could predict mortality, recurrent ischemic stroke, cardiovascular and peripheral artery diseases, and hemorrhagic stroke among patients with acute ischemic stroke. The combination of baseline EPA/AA ratio and statin therapy could be critical in predicting the long-term prognosis of ischemic stroke patients. PMID: 31969533 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stroke in cardiac sarcoidosis: Need to worry?
CONCLUSIONS: Ischemic stroke in patients with CS can be attributed to a cardioembolic phenomenon. A high index of clinical suspicion is needed for early diagnosis and management of these patients. PMID: 33189209 [PubMed - in process]

Novel insights into stroke risk beyond resting and maximal bicycle exercise systolic blood pressure
Conclusion: Stroke risk increased with increasing difference between resting and maximal exercise SBP, independent of BP at rest, suggesting that an exaggerated BP response to physical exercise may be an independent predictor of stroke.

Lipid-Modifying Therapies and Stroke Prevention
Curr Neurol Neurosci Rep. 2022 May 13. doi: 10.1007/s11910-022-01197-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: We reviewed lipid-modifying therapies and the risk of stroke and other cerebrovascular outcomes, with a focus on newer therapies.RECENT FINDINGS: Statins and ezetimibe reduce ischemic stroke risk without increasing hemorrhagic stroke risk. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors similarly reduce ischemic stroke risk in statin-treated patients with atherosclerosis without increasing hemorrhagic stroke, even with very low achieved low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Icosape...

Epidemiology of Stroke and Coronary Artery Disease in Asia.
Abstract Stroke and coronary artery disease (CAD) are major causes of death throughout the world. As half of the world's population lives in Asian countries, prevention of stroke and CAD in Asia is crucial. According to the vital statistics, East Asian countries have a lower mortality rate for CAD than for stroke. In contrast, CAD is a more common cause of death than stroke in other Asian countries and Western countries. Hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and smoking are major risk factors for stroke and CAD in Asia as well as in Western countries. In an observational study in Japan, the stroke incidenc...

Long-Term Effects of Secondary Prevention on Cognitive Function in Stroke Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Appropriate vascular risk management was associated with a long-term reduced risk of cognitive impairment. Focus on optimal preventive drug therapy of vascular risk factors and management should be supported. PMID: 23935013 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Stroke 8: A Daily Checklist for Inpatient Stroke Management
We describe the Stroke 8 checklist, designed to be part of the daily assessment of patients hospitalized with acute stroke. It consists of 8 items classified into 3 categories as follows: (1) stroke prevention: antithrombotic use, statin use, glucose control, blood pressure control; (2) prevention of complications: deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis, temperature control; and (3) recovery and disposition: fluids and nutrition, mobility and therapy. The Stroke 8 checklist has been implemented in 3 formats over an 8-year period: laminated cards, an electronic documentation template, and an electronic template supplemented wit...

Blood pressure control and risk profile in poststroke survivors: a comparison with the general population
Conclusion: We found a high prevalence and poor control of major cardiovascular risk factors in patients surviving their first-ever ischemic stroke, thus showing poor implementation of guidelines for secondary prevention in clinical practice.
