Race-Sex Differences in Statin Use and Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Control Among People With Diabetes Mellitus in the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke Study Health Services and Outcomes Research
BackgroundStatin therapy is a cornerstone of cardiovascular disease risk reduction for people with diabetes mellitus. Past reports have shown race‐sex differences in statin use in general populations, but statin patterns by race and sex in those with diabetes mellitus have not been thoroughly studied. Methods and ResultsOur sample of 4288 adults ≥45 years of age with diagnosed diabetes mellitus who had low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C)>100 mg/dL or were taking statins recruited for the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke study from 2003 to 2007. Exposures included race‐sex groups (w...

Gastric Bypass Surgery Produces a Durable Reduction in Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors and Reduces the Long-Term Risks of Congestive Heart Failure Preventive Cardiology
ConclusionsGastric bypass is associated with a reduced risk of major cardiovascular events and the development of congestive heart failure.

Evaluating the Impact and Cost-Effectiveness of Statin Use Guidelines for Primary Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke.
Conclusions -At a population level, the ACC-AHA guideline for expanded statin use for primary prevention is projected to treat more people, save more lives, and cost less compared with ATP III, in both men and women. Whether individuals benefit from long-term statin use for primary prevention depends more on the disutility associated with pill burden than their degree of cardiovascular risk. 2.6-fold risk of ischemic stroke in individuals with clinical familial hypercholesterolemia: The copenhagen general population study with 102,961 individuals
Aim: Familial hypercholesterolemia(FH) is a condition with high concentrations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high risk of ischemic heart disease. However, there is contradictory information on whether these individuals have higher risk of ischemic stroke.

Association of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration with different types of stroke and coronary heart disease: The Japan Public Health Center-based prospective (JPHC) study
Although low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentration is an established risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD), information regarding subtypes of stroke is very limited, especially in Asian populations.

Differential effects of PCSK9 variants on risk of coronary disease and ischaemic stroke
ConclusionPCSK9 genetic variants that confer life-long lower PCSK9 and LDL-C levels appear to have significantly weaker, if any, associations with risk of IS than with risk of CHD. By contrast, similar proportional reductions in risks of IS and CHD have been observed in randomized trials of therapeutic PCSK9-inhibition. These findings have implications for our understanding of when Mendelian randomization can be relied upon to predict the effects of therapeutic interventions.

Willingness to be Re-initiated on a Statin (From the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke REGARDS Study)
Guidelines recommend attempting to re-initiate statins in patients who discontinue treatment. Prior experiences while taking a statin, including side effects, may reduce a person's willingness to re-initiate treatment. We determined the percentage of adults who are willing to re-initiate statin therapy after treatment discontinuation. Factors associated with willingness to re-initiate a statin were also examined. A statin questionnaire was administered and study examination conducted among black and white US adults enrolled in the nationwide REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study between 2013 and 2017.
