Cost-Effectiveness of Catheter Ablation Versus Antiarrhythmic Drug Therapy in Atrial Fibrillation: The CABANA Randomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSION: Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation was economically attractive compared with drug therapy in the CABANA Trial overall at present benchmarks for health care value in the United States on the basis of projected incremental QALYs but not LYs alone.PMID:35726631 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.122.058575

Medicare Bundled Payment Policy on Anemia Care, Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events, and Mortality among Adults Undergoing Hemodialysis
CONCLUSIONS: The Medicare reimbursement policy and Food and Drug Administration-recommended erythropoietin-stimulating agent dosing changes were associated with lower erythropoietin-stimulating agent use and lower hemoglobin levels. These changes in anemia care were associated with lower risks of major adverse cardiovascular event, stroke, mortality, and heart failure but higher risk of acute myocardial infarction among adults receiving hemodialysis.PMID:35589388 | DOI:10.2215/CJN.14361121

P-029 Impact of in-hospital delirium on outcomes of acute ischemic stroke
ConclusionsDelirium complicates ~3.5% of AIS admissions, and is associated with increased risk of in-hospital death, longer stay, higher charges and decrease in likelihood of home discharge.Disclosures D. Atrial fibrillation in critically ill patients who received prolonged mechanical ventilation: a nationwide inpatient report
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of comorbid AF is increasing, particularly in older patients. AF may lead to poorer prognosis, and high-quality intensive care is imperative for this population.PMID:34247459 | DOI:10.3904/kjim.2020.142

Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases Among Older Breast Cancer Survivors in the United States: A Matched Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Women with a history of breast cancer were at increased risk of several CVDs, persisting into survivorship. Monitoring and managing cardiovascular risk throughout the long-term follow-up of women diagnosed with breast cancer should be a priority. PMID: 33401236 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Aortic Annular Enlargement in the Elderly: Short and Long-Term Outcomes in the United States.
CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest annular enlargement during SAVR is associated with increased short-term risk in a Medicare population. Survival curves crossed after three years, which may portend a benefit in select patients. However, annular enlargement is still only done in the minority of patients who are at risk for PPM. How to Keep Alzheimer ’s From Bringing About the Zombie Apocalypse
I tried to kill my father for years. To be fair, I was following his wishes. He’d made it clear that when he no longer recognized me, when he could no longer talk, when the nurses started treating him like a toddler, he didn’t want to live any longer. My father was 58 years old when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He took the diagnosis with the self-deprecating humor he’d spent a lifetime cultivating, constantly cracking jokes about how he would one day turn into a zombie, a walking corpse. We had a good 10 years with him after the diagnosis. Eventually, his jokes came true. Seven years ...

Medicare's bundled payment model did not change skilled nursing facility discharge patterns.
CONCLUSIONS: Hospital participation in BPCI was not associated with changes in the number of SNF partners or in discharge concentration relative to non-BPCI hospitals. More research is needed to understand how hospitals are responding to bundled payment incentives and specific practices that contribute to improvements in cost and quality. Accountability Assessment of Health Improvements in the United States Associated with Reduced Coal Emissions Between 2005 and 2012
Conclusions: The direct analyses of emissions reductions estimate substantial health benefits via coal power plant emission and PM2.5 concentration reductions. Differing responses associated with changes in the two exposure metrics underscore the importance of isolating source-specific impacts from those due to total PM2.5 exposure.
