Dyslipidemia.
Abstract Dyslipidemia is an important risk factor for coronary artery disease and stroke. Long-term, prospective epidemiologic studies have consistently shown that persons with healthier lifestyles and fewer risk factors for coronary heart disease, and particularly those with favorable lipid profiles, have reduced incidence of coronary heart disease. Prevention and sensible management of dyslipidemia can markedly alter cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. PMID: 29204622 [PubMed - in process]

Anesthetic management of off-pump simultaneous coronary artery bypass grafting and lobectomy: Case report and literature review
Rationale: Survey data show approximately 10% patients with lung cancer may present concomitant coronary heart disease. Simultaneous surgery is a challenge for anesthetist. We review our experience in the anesthesia with 5 patients who required simultaneous off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCABG) and pulmonary resection for lung cancer. Patient concerns: Between 2014 and 2016, 5 patients with ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) grade II or III, underwent combined OPCABG and lung resection in the first Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine. Diagnoses: All five patients were di...

Early neurological deterioration during the acute phase as a predictor of long-term outcome after first-ever ischemic stroke
Early neurological deterioration (END) is associated with increased risk of functional disability and mortality. However, data are limited regarding the long-term risk of poor functional outcomes. Thus we explored the association between END and long-term outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke. A total of 1064 patients were enrolled with acute ischemic stroke who were consecutively admitted to the 3 stroke units of Huai-He Hospital, Kaifeng, China. END was defined as an increment change of at least one point in motor power or total National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score deterioration ≥2 points ...

Association of central blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases in diabetic patients with hypertension
Abstract AbstractTo evaluate association of central blood pressure (BP) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in diabetic patients with hypertension. This was a cross-section study and 360 participants were enrolled. Baseline characteristics were collected and indices of central BP including central systolic/diastolic BP (SBP/DBP), augmentation index adjusted for 75 beats per minute of heart rate (AIx@75) were measured. Participants were separated into with and without CVD groups and between-group differences were assessed. Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate potential risk factors for increased AIx@75. Logistic regr...

Psychosocial stress and major cardiovascular events in patients with stable coronary heart disease
ConclusionsPsychosocial stress, such as depressive symptoms, loss of interest, living alone, and financial stress, was associated with increased CV mortality in patients with stable CHD despite optimal medical secondary prevention treatment. Secondary prevention of CHD should therefore focus also on psychosocial issues both in clinical management and in future clinical trials. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Direct, indirect and total bilirubin and risk of incident coronary heart disease in the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort.
CONCLUSION: DBIL was associated with a dose-response increased risk for CHD incidence. However, a U-shaped association existed between TBIL, IBIL and incident CHD risk. PMID: 28879775 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Carotid atherosclerosis and its relationship to coronary heart disease and stroke risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Abstract: Carotid atherosclerosis (CA) and carotid plaque (CP) are highly correlated with cardiovascular disease. We aimed to determine the prevalence of CA and CP and their relationship with 10-year risks of stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We studied 1584 T2DM patients aged 20 years and older. CA and CP were detected using ultrasonography. Ten-year stroke and CHD risk were determined using the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) risk engine. The prevalence of CA and CP increased gradually with age. Men had a higher prevalence of CA than women (CA: 58.18% vs 51.54%, P

The prescription of antiplatelet medication in a very elderly population: An observational study in 15  141 ambulatory subjects
ConclusionIn this study, which is very interested for its size and the advanced age of the subjects, long‐course AM was prescribed in one third of ambulatory elderly patients. Coronary heart disease, severe hypertension and diabetes were more frequent in AM subjects. However, the low percentage of declared strokes was surprising. We provide additional data to doctors following subjects with AM.

Integrative studies implicate matrix metalloproteinase ‐12 as a culprit gene for large‐artery atherosclerotic stroke
ConclusionsOur study supports the notion that MMP12 is implicated in large‐artery atherosclerotic stroke, functionally by enhancing elastin degradation and macrophage invasion in plaques.

Vasectomy and cardiovascular disease risk: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion: Our findings suggest that vasectomy is not associated with the excess risk of CVD incidence and mortality. Nevertheless, large-volume, well-designed observational studies, with different ethnic populations, low risk of bias, and adjusted confounding factors, are awaited to confirm and update the findings of this analysis.

Disparities in US Healthcare Provider Screening and Advice for Cessation Across Chronic Medical Conditions and Tobacco Products
ConclusionsResults support the need for provider training to expand screening and cessation interventions to include the growing spectrum of tobacco products. Screening and referral to interventions are especially needed for those with mental health and substance use disorders to reduce the disparate burden of tobacco-related disease and death.

The evolving role of oral hormonal therapies and review of conjugated estrogens/bazedoxifene for the management of menopausal symptoms.
Authors: Parish SJ, Gillespie JA Abstract This review describes the evolving role of oral hormone therapy (HT) for treating menopausal symptoms and preventing osteoporosis, focusing on conjugated estrogens/bazedoxifene (CE/BZA). Estrogens alleviate hot flushes and prevent bone loss associated with menopause. In nonhysterectomized women, a progestin should be added to estrogens to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer. Use of HT declined since the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) studies showed that HT does not prevent coronary heart disease (CHD) and that conjugated estrogens/medroxyprogesterone acetate increased th...
