Effect of Vascular Risk Factors and Diseases on Mortality in Individuals with Dementia: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis
ConclusionIndividuals with dementia and DM, smoking, CHD, and CHF have a greater risk of death than individuals with dementia without these risk factors or diseases.

Cognitive function and disability in late life: an ecological validation of the 10/66 battery of cognitive tests among community‐dwelling older adults in South India
ConclusionsLower scores on individual domains of the 10/66 battery of cognitive tests are associated with higher levels of disability and functional impairment in community‐dwelling older adults. These culture and education fair tests are suitable for use in population‐based research in India.

Alzheimer's disease or Alzheimer's syndrome?: a longitudinal computed tomography neuroradiological follow‐up study of 56 cases diagnosed clinically as Alzheimer's disease
ConclusionCases of so‐called Alzheimer's disease, as observed through continued clinical follow‐up and serial CT examinations, appear so diverse in symptomatology and radiological pathomorphology that it is difficult to consider them a single nosological entity. The pathology of Alzheimer's disease has to be reconsidered in accordance with the variety observed in the sequential development of neuroradiological findings. The pathology must be reconstructed in terms of topographical dimensions and chronological developments. The diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease appears to be not so simple based on any conventional diagno...

Recognition and Management of Hypertension in Older Persons: Focus on African Americans
This article will review the evidence and current guideline recommendations for hypertension treatment in older African Americans, including the rationale for continuing to recommend a SBP target of less than 140 mmHg in this population.

Bullous pemphigoid and neurodegenerative diseases: a study in a setting of a Central European university dermatology department.
Abstract Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune blistering dermatosis of the elderly mediated by IgG and IgE antibodies to skin hemidesmosomal proteins, BP180 and/or BP230, that occur physiologically also in neuronal tissue. It was reported that BP is associated with neurodegenerative diseases (ND). We performed a retrospective study in a setting of a Central European university dermatology department on prevalence of ND in 94 BP patients. 26 out of 94 BP patients had at least one ND. ND included: Parkinson's disease, dementia, stroke, hear loss, tinnitus, blindness, vertigo, neurosyphilis, systemic sclerosis, a...

Pre‐stroke dementia does not affect the post‐acute care functional outcome of old patients with ischemic stroke
ConclusionsThe present findings suggest that a diagnosis of pre‐stroke dementia is associated with lower FIM scores at admission and discharge in patients with ischemic stroke. Yet, daily motor FIM gains were similar in PSD and non‐PSD patients, suggesting that these patients should not be deprived of a post‐acute rehabilitation, based on a diagnosis of dementia before stroke onset. From left bundle branch block to Icelandic whales: the multiple perils of atrial fibrillation management in the elderly.
We present the case of an elderly woman which demonstrates how AF therapy in aged individuals is particularly challenging for the presence of complex conditions. The rhythm- or the rate control strategy must be carefully chosen based on individual risk profile. Oral anticoagulant therapy must be wisely managed to maximize benefits-in terms of stroke and dementia control-and to reduce complications. PMID: 26319529 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Depression as a risk factor for cognitive impairment in later life: the Health In Men cohort study
ConclusionsThe lack of association between past depression and cognitive impairment suggests that the link between depression and cognitive impairment is not causal and that the presence of clinically significant depressive symptoms in later life may herald the onset of cognitive impairment in at least some people. Relationship between swallowing function and the skeletal muscle mass of older adults requiring long‐term care
ConclusionsDecreased swallowing function was closely correlated with poor tongue motility, and this finding is similar to those of previous studies. However, the present results also show that decreased Skeletal Muscle Mass Index is a novel risk factor for dysphagia among older adults who require long‐term care. Prostanoid-mediated contractions of the carotid artery become Nox2-independent with aging
In conclusion, aging decreases prostanoid-mediated contractility in the carotid artery involving a loss of Nox2 activity and is associated with impaired endothelium-dependent, NO-mediated relaxation. These findings may contribute to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of carotid artery disease and the aging process.

Survival in Subcortical Vascular Dementia: Predictors and Comparison to Probable Alzheimer's Disease in a Tertiary Memory Clinic Population
Conclusions: Stroke prevention may be important in SVaD treatment because 47.1% of SVaD patients died of stroke. A family history of stroke and absence of hypertension were associated with a shorter survival in SVaD, suggesting the existence of genetic or unknown risk factors.Dement Geriatr Cogn Disord 2015;40:210-221

Dementia in elderly inpatients admitted to medical wards in Brazil: diagnosis and comorbidity with other clinical diseases
ConclusionsThe prevalence of CFI and dementia was high among the elderly inpatients examined. The identification of medical and sociodemographic conditions associated with a dementia diagnosis in a general hospital may be useful in the development of preventative actions.
