The Diagnostic Utility of the NINDS-CSN Neuropsychological Battery in Memory Clinics
Conclusion: The NINDS-CSN neuropsychological battery can be applied in memory clinics and effectively discriminate between cognitively intact individuals and those with cognitive impairments of varying severity. Furthermore, level of education should be taken into consideration when choosing protocols with different lengths for cognitive assessment.Dement Geriatr Cogn Disord Extra 2016;6:276-282

Are stroke survivors with delirium at higher risk of post‐stroke dementia? Current evidence and future directions
ConclusionsThere is a need for further studies to investigate the association of post‐stroke delirium and dementia using well‐defined cohorts of patients and controlling for factors such as pre‐stroke cognition, stroke severity and location and the presence of persistent delirium. Such studies will help understand the place of delirium identification and prevention in reducing the risk of dementia after stroke. © 2016 The Authors International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd

Pulse Pressure Is Associated With Early Brain Atrophy and Cognitive Decline: Modifying Effects of APOE-ε4
We investigated whether midlife pulse pressure is associated with brain atrophy and cognitive decline, and whether the association was modified by apolipoprotein-E ε4 (APOE-ε4) and hypertension. Participants (549 stroke-free and dementia-free Framingham Offspring Cohort Study participants, age range=55.0 to 64.9 y) underwent baseline neuropsychological and magnetic resonance imaging (subset, n=454) evaluations with 5- to 7-year follow-up. Regression analyses investigated associations between baseline pulse pressure (systolic−diastolic pressure) and cognition, total cerebral volume and temporal horn ventricular volume (...

Delayed-onset dementia after stroke or transient ischemic attack
Discussion Severe SVD contributes importantly to delayed-onset dementia after stroke and/or TIA. Future clinical trials aiming to prevent delayed-onset dementia after stroke and/or TIA should target this high-risk group.

Prevalence of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Its Subtypes among Chinese Older Adults: Role of Vascular Risk Factors
Conclusions: The prevalence of MCI is almost 11% among Chinese older adults. VRF and vascular disorders are associated with MCI, especially naMCI.Dement Geriatr Cogn Disord 2016;41:261-272

Tract-specific white matter microstructure and gait in humans.
Abstract Gait is a complex sequence of movements, requiring cooperation of many brain areas, such as the motor cortex, somatosensory cortex, and cerebellum. However, it is unclear which connecting white matter tracts are essential for communication across brain areas to facilitate proper gait. Using diffusion tensor imaging, we investigated associations of microstructural organization in 14 brain white matter tracts with gait, among 2330 dementia- and stroke-free community-dwelling individuals. Gait was assessed by electronic walkway and summarized into Global Gait, and 7 gait domains. Higher white matter microstr...

Validation Study of the Korean Version of the Brief Clinical Form of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory
Conclusions: The KNPI-Q is a reliable and brief instrument that can be employed for screening in the evaluation of neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia and associated caregiver distress. It may be suitable for use in general clinical practice and could be administered as a brief neuropsychiatric interview.Dement Geriatr Cogn Disord Extra 2016;6:214-221

Age-dependent expression of VEGFR2 in deep brain arteries in small vessel disease, CADASIL, and healthy brains.
Abstract Vascular myocytes are central to brain aging. Small vessel disease (SVD; arteriolosclerosis) is a widespread cause of lacunar stroke and vascular dementia and is characterized by fibrosis and depletion of vascular myocytes in small penetrating arteries. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is associated with brain aging, and Immunolabeling for vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) is a potent determinant of cell fate. Here, we tested whether VEGFR2 in vascular myocytes is associated with older age and SVD in human brain. Immunolabeling for VEGFR2 in deep gray matter was assessed in o...

2016 Alzheimer's disease facts and figures
This report describes the public health impact of Alzheimer's disease, including incidence and prevalence, mortality rates, costs of care, and the overall impact on caregivers and society. It also examines in detail the financial impact of Alzheimer's on families, including annual costs to families and the difficult decisions families must often make to pay those costs. An estimated 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease. By mid-century, the number of people living with Alzheimer's disease in the United States is projected to grow to 13.8 million, fueled in large part by the aging baby boom generation. Today, someo...

Factors Influencing Non-Persistence with Antiplatelet Medications in Elderly Patients After Ischaemic Stroke
Conclusions Our results suggest that women, patients aged <75 years, and patients without certain comorbid conditions may need improved assistance in secondary prevention management after an ischaemic stroke.

An Open-Label Study to Assess Safety, Tolerability, and Effectiveness of Dextromethorphan/Quinidine for Pseudobulbar Affect (PBA) in Dementia, Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury: PRISM II Combined Cohort Results for Patients Aged ≥65 Years
Introduction: Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is a neurologic condition characterized by laughing and crying episodes that are uncontrollable, disruptive, and generally incongruent with social context and prevailing mood. PBA can occur secondary to a variety of unrelated neurologic conditions such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke and Alzheimer's disease. It is estimated that approximately 9% of nursing home residents have symptoms suggestive of PBA.1,2 Dextromethorphan/quinidine (DM/Q) is the only treatment FDA-approved for PBA; approval was based on phase 3 studies in patients with PBA secondary to amyotrophic lateral sc...

Multiplex analyte assays to characterize different dementias: brain inflammatory cytokines in poststroke and other dementias.
Abstract Both the inflammatory potential and cognitive function decline during aging. The association between the repertoire of inflammatory biomarkers and cognitive decline is unclear. Inflammatory cytokines have been reported to be increased, decreased, or unchanged in the cerebrospinal fluid and sera of subjects with dementia. We assessed 112 postmortem brains from subjects diagnosed with poststroke dementia (PSD), vascular dementia, mixed dementia, and Alzheimer's disease (AD), comparing those to poststroke nondemented (PSND) subjects and age-matched controls. We analyzed 5 brain regions including the gray and...
