Association of Echocardiographic Measures of Left Atrial Function and Size With Incident Dementia
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this exploratory analysis of a US community-based cohort, several echocardiographic measures of lower LA function were significantly associated with an increased risk of subsequent dementia. Measures of LA size were not significantly associated with dementia risk. Conclusion: Intracranial artery calcification is common in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease and the intracranial carotid artery is most frequently affected. Intracranial arterial calcifications might be associated with imaging markers of SVD and are highly correlated with WMHs, lacunes, and CMBs. Conclusion: We conclude that an adequately powered clinical trial of IVIG for HIVM would likely require a prolonged recruitment period and multiple participating sites. Design of the Swiss Atrial Fibrillation Cohort Study (Swiss-AF): structural brain damage and cognitive decline among patients with atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSION: Swiss-AF is a large national prospective cohort of patients with AF in Switzerland. The use of a portable three-lead ECG monitor to detect atrial fibrillation in general practice.
CONCLUSIONS: The inexpensive portable PEM device recording diagnosed AF with a high sensitivity and specificity. KEY POINTS Simple ECG monitors could be useful to identify atrial fibrillation and thereby lead to a better prevention of stroke. The PEM device was easy to use and 95.7% of the recordings were technically acceptable for detecting atrial fibrillation. The PEM device has a high sensitivity and specificity in detecting atrial fibrillation compared to a standard 12-lead ECG. Running 7 minutes a day 'halves heart death risk'
Conclusion This well-conducted cohort study found running is associated with a reduction in risk of death from any cause and death from cardiovascular disease during a 15-year follow-up. It calculated running was associated with a three-year increase in life expectancy. Conclusions: In the absence of clinical stroke, people with incident atrial fibrillation are likely to reach thresholds of cognitive impairment or dementia at earlier ages than people with no history of atrial fibrillation.
