A randomized placebo-controlled, double-blind study to investigate the effect of a high oral loading dose of cholecalciferol in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients, new insights on serum STAT-3 and hepassocin
CONCLUSIONS: Cholecalciferol is recommended as additional therapy to modulate lipid peroxidation and systemic inflammation alongside other NAFLD therapies.PMID:37667938 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202308_33413

The benefit of metformin in the treatment of pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Conclusion: According to the data of this meta-analysis, treatment with metformin failed to statistically improve liver enzymes but may be beneficial in the improvement of lipid parameters and insulin metabolism regulation in pediatric patients with NAFLD. As there are not enough available studies in the literature, the influence of metformin on liver ultrasonography or histology in pediatric NAFLD should be further analyzed in future studies. What is Known:• Lifestyle modification with weight loss through physical activity and dietary modification is the recommended treatment option for pediatric NAFLD.• Metformin may ...

Liver Fat Storage Is a Better Predictor of Coronary Artery Disease than Visceral Fat
This study measured associations among visceral fat storage, fatty liver, insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, and CAD. Patients were divided into three groups: excess visceral fat (visceral fat area >330 ± 99 cm2), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and a control group. The definition of fatty liver is liver minus spleen density greater than or equal to -10. We defined early atherosclerosis as intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery >7 mm in men and >0.65 mm in women, measured with Doppler ultrasound. Visceral fat area was defined using CT (>330 ± 99 cm2). Insulin-resistance biomarkers (H...

Impact of HBV infection on clinical outcomes in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease
CONCLUSIONS: The large population-based study revealed chronic HBV infection increases the overall risk of liver fibrosis, but protects from atherosclerosis in patients with MAFLD.IMPACT AND IMPLICATIONS: Patients with metabolic-associated fatty liver disease can also be coinfected with chronic HBV. Concomitant HBV infection increases the overall risk of liver fibrosis, but protects from atherosclerosis in patients with MAFLD.PMID:37600956 | PMC:PMC10432217 | DOI:10.1016/j.jhepr.2023.100836

Comparison of the severity of metabolic, liver and cardiovascular damage in NAFLD patients attending the hepatology clinic over the last three decades
CONCLUSION: Over the past 10 years compared to previous decades, NAFLD patients presented to observation with more severe liver disease and subclinical atherosclerosis, paralleling the spread of diabetes and obesity. PNPLA3 unfavorable genotype became more prevalent over time.PMID:37507284 | DOI:10.1016/j.dld.2023.07.009

Residual burden of liver disease after HCV clearance in hemophilia: a word of caution in the era of gene therapy
Blood Adv. 2023 Jul 28:bloodadvances.2023010723. doi: 10.1182/bloodadvances.2023010723. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRuling out advanced fibrosis/cirrhosis is mandatory for persons with hemophilia (PWH) who are candidate to gene therapy. However, clinical evaluation and non-invasive tests may be inaccurate after HCV clearance. We conducted a prospective hepatological screening to detect advanced fibrosis/cirrhosis in PWH after HCV clearance. Any risk factor of chronic liver damage was registered by using biochemical data, liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and ultrasound (US). A pre/post HCV clearance analysis was prospect...

Novel predictors of early atherosclerosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
CONCLUSIONS: Serum endocan levels, MPV and CIMT could be considered as good predictors of endothelial dysfunction and therefore early detection of subclinical atherosclerosis in NAFLD patients.PMID:37502438 | PMC:PMC10369661 | DOI:10.5114/ceh.2023.127466

Information Entropy and Its Applications
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2023;1403:153-167. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-21987-0_8.ABSTRACTUltrasound is a first-line diagnostic tool for imaging many disease states. A number of statistical distributions have been proposed to describe ultrasound backscattering measured from tissues having different disease states. As an example, in this chapter we use nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is a critical health issue on a global scale, to demonstrate the capabilities of ultrasound to diagnose disease. Ultrasound interaction with the liver is typically characterized by scattering, which is quantified for the purpose of determin...

Clinical Practice Guidelines For the Management of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Systematic Review
ConclusionsThe included CPGs provided a comprehensive approach, emphasizing the evaluation of risk factors, utilization of the BCLC staging system, and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. Regular surveillance using ultrasound for cirrhotic patients was widely recommended. An understanding of contemporary international CPGs can prioritize aspects of the management of HCC to assist healthcare professionals to develop a national guideline to enable standardized, comprehensive, and evidence-based care for patients with HCC.
