Bleeding Related Episodes, Thrombotic Events and Platelet Counts Among Immune Thrombocytopenia Patients Receiving Second Line Therapy
CONCLUSIONS: This retrospective real world evidence study compares mean platelet response and burden of both BREs and TEs in ITP patients treated with different second-line treatments. Although there were significant differences in mean platelet counts achieved with the second-line treatments, TEs were observed with similar incidence across all treatments. Patients who received splenectomy had the highest mean platelet counts and also the highest proportion of patients who experienced TEs, though differences in TEs did not reach statistical significance. Incidence proportion of patients with BREs was lower in patients trea...

Safety and effectiveness of apixaban in comparison to warfarin in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: a propensity-matched analysis from Japanese administrative claims data.
CONCLUSIONS: Our observational data from clinical practice broadly confirm the safety and efficacy results of pivotal randomized controlled trials of apixaban for stroke prevention among NVAF patients. PMID: 29772946 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A clinical decision support tool for improving adherence to guidelines on anticoagulant therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke: A cluster-randomized trial in a Swedish primary care setting (the CDS-AF study)
ConclusionsThe present study demonstrates that a CDS can increase guideline adherence for anticoagulant therapy in patients with AF. Even though the observed difference was small, this is the first randomized study to our knowledge indicating beneficial effects with a CDS in patients with AF. Annual costs attributed to atrial fibrillation management: cross-sectional study of primary healthcare electronic records
This study aims to describe overall annual costs per patient for management of non-valvular AF in a primary healthcare (PHC) setting and compare these costs between the groups of patients treated with vitamin K antagonists, antiplatelets or non-treated through a population-based study conducted with electronic health records. We analysed annual costs per person of 19,787 patients in 2012; PHC visits, hospital admissions, AF-related events requiring hospital admission, referrals to secondary specialists, sick leave, diagnostic tests and laboratory tests at PHC level, including INR determinations performed in PHC, and drug t...

Clinical profile and outcomes in octogenarians with atrial fibrillation: A community-based study in a specific European health care area
Age increases risk of stroke and bleeding. Clinical trial data have had relatively low proportions of elderly subjects. We sought to study a Spanish population of octogenarians with atrial fibrillation (AF) by combining different sources of electronic clinical records from an area where all medical centres utilized electronic health record systems.

Dabigatran and vitamin K antagonists ’ use in naïve patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation: a cross-sectional study of primary care-based electronic health records
ConclusionsMost patients recently diagnosed with non-valvular atrial fibrillation initiated treatment with VKA. Primary healthcare patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation initiating dabigatran are younger, had a lower risk of stroke or bleeding, fewer comorbidity and more history of stroke and intracranial haemorrhage compared to those who were initiated on VKA.

Impact of renal function on ischemic stroke and major bleeding rates in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients treated with warfarin or rivaroxaban: a retrospective cohort study using real-world evidence.
CONCLUSIONS: Ischemic stroke rates were significantly lower in the overall NVAF population for rivaroxaban vs warfarin users, including patients with eCrCl below 50 mL/min. For all renal function groups, major bleeding risks were not statistically different between treatment groups. PMID: 28590785 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effectiveness, safety and costs of thromboembolic prevention in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation: phase I ESC-FA protocol study and baseline characteristics of a cohort from a primary care electronic database
Purpose Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia. Its management aims to reduce symptoms and to prevent complications through rate and rhythm control, management of concomitant cardiac diseases and prevention of related complications, mainly stroke. The main objective of Effectiveness, Safety and Costs in Atrial Fibrillation (ESC-FA) study is to analyse the drugs used for the management of the disease in real-use conditions, particularly the antithrombotic agents for stroke prevention. The aim of this work is to present the study protocol of phase I of the ESC-FA study and the baseline characteristics of newly dia...

Abstract 156: Body Mass Index and Outcomes among Patients with Atrial Fibrillation from the ATRIA2-CVRN Study Poster Session II
In conclusion, overweight and moderate obesity appear protective for all-cause mortality in at-risk AF patients during off-warfarin periods, but these effects do not appear to be mediated by reduced risk of thromboembolism or major bleeding.
