Medical innovation, education, and labor market outcomes of cancer patients
Publication date: December 2019Source: Journal of Health Economics, Volume 68Author(s): Sung-Hee Jeon, R. Vincent PohlAbstractInnovations in cancer treatment have lowered mortality, but little is known about their economic benefits. We assess the effect of two decades of improvement in cancer treatment options on the labor market outcomes of breast and prostate cancer patients. In addition, we compare this effect across cancer patients with different levels of educational attainment. We estimate the effect of medical innovation on cancer patients’ labor market outcomes employing tax return and cancer registry data from C...

Second primary cancers: a retrospective analysis of real world data using the enhanced medical research engine ConSoRe in a French comprehensive cancer center
CONCLUSION: The data mining tool ConSoRe contributes to access to real world data, and to better characterize patients with SPC. Expanding such approach to any comprehensive center will allow a global overview of the follow-up of patients with cancer, and help to improve long-term management and adapt surveillance.PMID:34091824 | DOI:10.1007/s10147-021-01963-3

Impact of Androgen Deprivation Therapy on Sexual and Hormonal Function in Patients Receiving Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: The addition of ADT to RT is responsible for decrements in quality of life in the sexual and hormonal vitality domains, which is further compounded by depression and lack of education. This underlines the need to improve education, identify and treat depression, and develop strategies to improve the quality of life of patients receiving combination therapy. Non ‐medical prescribing in prostate cancer care: a case study reflection
ABSTRACT There are approximately 54 000 nurse and midwife prescribers across the United Kingdom (UK), with 19 000 nurse independent and supplementary prescribers. Prostate cancer specialist nurses are ideally suited to implement advanced levels of practice in non‐medical prescribing, but little has been detailed in the literature about the prescribing practice in this clinical context. This paper set out to critically review evidence‐based recommendations for Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses using a case study reflection to contextualize the role of non‐medical prescribing. A structured literature review was con...

Sepsis Alliance Launches New Community Education Kit to Raise Sepsis Awareness Across America
Nearly half of Americans haven’t heard of sepsis, the body’s life-threatening response to infection that kills more than a quarter million people every year in the U.S. Sepsis Alliance, the nation’s leading sepsis advocacy organization, just launchead a new Sepsis 911 Community Education Kit that empowers sepsis advocates across the country to make a difference in their local community by spreading the word about sepsis. “There are passionate sepsis advocates in every corner of this country and Sepsis Alliance is excited to offer a new tool to help these leaders share their stories and raise sepsis awareness,” sa...

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 3479: Methods for Evaluating the Efficacy of Medical Castration: A Systematic Review
Morote Measuring serum testosterone determination during medical castration is recommended by prostate cancer (PCa) guidelines to assess its efficacy and define castration resistance. It has been suggested that other biochemical compounds, such as free testosterone or luteinising hormone (LH), could also assess castration efficacy. We aimed to analyse the current evidence for serum biochemical compounds that could be appropriate candidates for evaluating medical castration efficacy. A systematic review was conducted after two investigators independently searched the literature in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and EMBA...

Intermittent Androgen Deprivation Not Equivalent To Continuous Treatment For Prostate Cancer, May Compromise Survival
Taking a break from hormone-blocking prostate cancer treatments once the cancer seems to be stabilized is not equivalent to continuing therapy, a new large-scale international study finds. Based on previous smaller studies, it looked like an approach called intermittent androgen deprivation therapy might be just as good as continuous androgen deprivation in terms of survival while meanwhile giving patients a breather from the side effects of therapy...

Prior-knowledge treatment planning for volumetric arc therapy using feature-based database mining
Treatment planning for volumetric arc therapy (VMAT) is a lengthy process that requires many rounds of optimizations to obtain the best treatment settings and optimization constraints for a given patient’s geometry. We propose a feature-selection search engine that explores previously treated cases of similar anatomy, returning the optimal plan configurations and attainable DVH constraints. Using an institutional database of 83 previously treated cases of prostate carcinoma treated with volumetric-modulated arc therapy, the search procedure first finds the optimal isocenter position with an optimization procedure, then r...

Rates of prostate-specific antigen testing for early detection of prostate cancer : A first comparison of German results with current international data.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite current findings and controversial recommendations of the two large PCA screening studies on this issue, German GP-IS still frequently use PCA screening by PSA measurement. Primary strategies of early detection as well as follow-up after assessment of pathologically elevated PSA levels poorly follow international recommendations. Thus, an intensification of specific education is justified. PMID: 24700162 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
