Portal hypertension may influence the registration of hypointensity of small hepatocellular carcinoma in the hepatobiliary phase in gadoxetic acid MR
CONCLUSIONS: Liver uptake of Gd-EOB-DTPA at the HBP is decreased in cirrhosis even if the liver function is minimally impaired and it falls down significantly in patients with CSPH compromising the recognition of hypointense lesions. This fact may represent a limitation for the detection of small HCC in patients with cirrhosis and CSPH.PMID:35776837 | DOI:10.2478/raon-2022-0024

Imaging of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma : Reliable diagnosis according to the new S3  guideline
Radiologe. 2022 Jan 14. doi: 10.1007/s00117-021-00961-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe S3 guideline on hepatocellular carcinoma has been expanded to include malignant biliary carcinoma (synonym cholangiocarcinoma [CCA]). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with additional magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is the imaging modality of choice to evaluate local findings. Use of gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-based contrast agent increases its diagnostic value. Histologic confirmation is always required when diagnosing intrahepatic CCA (iCCA) because using imaging alo...

Metformin inhibits tumor growth and affects intestinal flora in diabetic tumor-bearing mice
In conclusion, type 2 diabetes could promote the growth of hepatoma cells in mice. Metformin could inhibit the growth of tumor under the condition of diabetes and play a role in the intestinal homeostasis in mice.PMID:34757071 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejphar.2021.174605

Bioactivities and Extract Dereplication of Actinomycetales Isolated From Marine Sponges
This study aimed to contribute to the need of finding new and more effective bioactive molecules against several of the earlier mentioned threats faced by human kind nowadays. For this, eighteen species from the Actinomycetales previously isolated from Erylus spp. sponges collected in Portuguese marine waters (Açores, Madeira, and continental shelf) were screened for antimicrobial, anti-cancer, anti-parasitic and anti-obesogenic activities. Materials and Methods Biological Material The bacteria under study belong to the order Actinomycetales within the phylum Actinobacteria and were isolated from marine sponges o...

Management of people with early- or very early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma: an attempted network meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: The evidence was of low or very low quality. There was no evidence of a difference in all-cause mortality at maximal follow-up between surgery and radiofrequency ablation in people eligible for surgery. All-cause mortality at maximal follow-up was higher with percutaneous acetic acid injection and percutaneous alcohol injection than with radiofrequency ablation in people not eligible for surgery. There was no evidence of a difference in all-cause mortality at maximal follow-up for the other comparisons. High-quality RCTs designed to assess clinically important differences in all-cause mortality and health-rela...

Mitochonic Acid 5 (MA-5), a Derivative of the Plant Hormone Indole-3-Acetic Acid, Improves Survival of Fibroblasts from Patients with Mitochondrial Diseases.
T, Tomioka Y, Toyomizu M, Ito S, Osaka H, Hayashi K, Abe T Abstract Mitochondria are key organelles implicated in a variety of processes related to energy and free radical generation, the regulation of apoptosis, and various signaling pathways. Mitochondrial dysfunction increases cellular oxidative stress and depletes ATP in a variety of inherited mitochondrial diseases and also in many other metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. Mitochondrial diseases are characterized by the dysfunction of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, caused by mutations in the genes encoded by either nuclear DNA or mitochondrial DNA...

Percutaneous ethanol injection or percutaneous acetic acid injection for early hepatocellular carcinoma.
CONCLUSIONS: PEI versus PAI did not differ significantly regarding benefits and harms in people with early HCC, but the two included trials had only a limited number of participants and one trial was judged a high risk of bias. Thus, the current evidence precludes us from making any firm conclusions. There was also insufficient evidence to determine whether PEI versus surgery (segmental liver resection) was more effective, because conclusions were based on a single randomised trial. While some data from this single trial suggested that PEI was safer, the high risk of bias and the lack of any confirmatory evidence make a rel...

Radiofrequency (thermal) ablation versus no intervention or other interventions for hepatocellular carcinoma.
CONCLUSIONS: The effects of RFA versus no intervention, chemotherapeutic treatment, or liver transplantation are unknown. We found moderate-quality evidence that hepatic resection is superior to RFA regarding survival. However, RFA might be associated with fewer complications and a shorter hospital stay than hepatic resection. We found moderate-quality evidence showing that RFA seems superior to percutaneous ethanol injection regarding survival. There were too sparse data to recommend or refute ablation achieved by techniques other than RFA. More randomised clinical trials with low risk of bias and low risks of random erro...
