Resveratrol attenuates peripheral and brain inflammation and reduces ischemic brain injury in aged female mice.
In this study, we investigated the effects of resveratrol on inflammation in visceral adipose tissue and the brain and its effects on ischemic brain injury in aged female mice. Mice treated with resveratrol (0.1 mg/kg, p.o.) for 10 days showed reduced levels of interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α, as well as a reduction in the size of adipocytes in visceral adipose tissue. Resveratrol also reduced interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α protein levels and immunoglobulin G extravasation in the brain. Mice treated with resveratrol demonstrated smaller infarct size, improved neurological function, and blunted ...

MRI for all: Cheap portable scanners aim to revolutionize medical imaging
.news-article__hero--featured .parallax__element{ object-position: 47% 50%; -o-object-position: 47% 50%; } The patient, a man in his 70s with a shock of silver hair, lies in the neuro intensive care unit (neuro ICU) at Yale New Haven Hospital. Looking at him, you’d never know that a few days earlier a tumor was removed from his pituitary gland. The operation didn’t leave a mark because, as is standard, surgeons reached the tumor through his nose. He chats cheerfully with a pair of research associates who have come to check his progress with a new and potentially revolutionary device they are testing. The cylind...

Multiplex analyte assays to characterize different dementias: brain inflammatory cytokines in poststroke and other dementias.
Abstract Both the inflammatory potential and cognitive function decline during aging. The association between the repertoire of inflammatory biomarkers and cognitive decline is unclear. Inflammatory cytokines have been reported to be increased, decreased, or unchanged in the cerebrospinal fluid and sera of subjects with dementia. We assessed 112 postmortem brains from subjects diagnosed with poststroke dementia (PSD), vascular dementia, mixed dementia, and Alzheimer's disease (AD), comparing those to poststroke nondemented (PSND) subjects and age-matched controls. We analyzed 5 brain regions including the gray and...

Synergy Extraction of Jaw Muscles During Mastication Based on Principal Components Analysis of Electromyogram Signal
Disorder in chewing food is a major problem in patients with stroke, some of those who suffer from brain lesion, multiple sclerosis, and other diseases such as head and neck cancer. This kind of disorder causes significantly decreased food consumption and consequently malnutrition or dehydration and in severe cases leads to suffocation. It can also increase the rate of death during the first year after the stroke to 45%. Therefore, finding an appropriate and common pattern of cooperation of jaw muscles in the act of chewing can have a very important role in assisting the process of rehabilitation in these patients. In this...

Call for new policy focus on brain health to reduce the risk of dementia
Action to tackle smoking, drinking, sedentary behaviour and poor diet could reduce the risk of dementia in later life alongside other conditions such as heart disease, stroke and many cancers.

Alzheimer's Disease: Exploring the Role of Inflammation and Implications for Treatment.
We present data demonstrating tumor necrosis factor alpha association with the inflammation of AD. We also discuss data supporting TNF alpha associated inflammation in traumatic brain injury, stroke, and spinal disc associated radiculopathy. We augment this previously unarticulated concept of a unifying pathophysiology of central nervous system disease, with reports of benefits of TNF alpha inhibition in many hundreds of patients with those diseases, including AD. We also assess the pathophysiologic and clinical trial evidence supporting the role of other inflammation resolving treatments in AD. In aggregate, the data from...

2017 Alzheimer's disease facts and figures
This article describes the public health impact of Alzheimer's disease (AD), including incidence and prevalence, mortality rates, costs of care, and the overall impact on caregivers and society. The Special Report examines how the use of biomarkers may influence the AD diagnostic process and estimates of prevalence and incidence of the disease. An estimated 5.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's dementia. By mid-century, the number of people living with Alzheimer's dementia in the United States is projected to grow to 13.8 million, fueled in large part by the aging baby boom generation. Today, someone in the country develo...

2018 Alzheimer's disease facts and figures
This article describes the public health impact of Alzheimer's disease (AD), including incidence and prevalence, mortality and morbidity, costs of care, and the overall impact on caregivers and society. The Special Report examines the benefits of diagnosing Alzheimer's earlier in the disease process, in the stage of mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease. An estimated 5.7 million Americans have Alzheimer's dementia. By mid-century, the number of people living with Alzheimer's dementia in the United States is projected to grow to 13.8 million, fueled in large part by the aging baby boom generation. In 2015, o...

Longitudinal association between brain volume change and gait speed in a general population.
CONCLUSION: In a four-year longitudinal study among 767 well-functioning community-dwelling healthy participants from a general population, we observed a significant association between brain volume changes and gait speed. PMID: 30611726 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Depressive symptoms across the age span: findings from an integrated epilepsy self-management clinical studies dataset.
Epilepsy has been reported by the CDC to have a prevalence of 1.2% in the United States, which accounts for roughly 3.4 million adults in 2015. Nearly 1 million of those adults are aged 55 or older.1 Epilepsy is more likely to develop in older adults because risk factors for epilepsy are more common as people age including stroke/cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, brain tumor and long-term sequelae of alcohol abuse.2 As our population ages, there will be even more older people with epilepsy.
