Using advanced information and communication technologies to advance oncology education in Africa
CONCLUSION: Africa has the capacity to implement successful e-Learning in oncology, which is consistent with findings in previous work such as the AORTIC. Greater investment by institutions and governments is needed in terms of resources and policy changes to facilitate the implementation of effective online oncology training. Purposeful engagement of diaspora oncology health professionals with relevant cultural backgrounds as with some current collaborative efforts is highly recommended in helping turn brain drain into brain circulation.PMID:33912236 | PMC:PMC8057784 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2021.1211

Imaging informatics for consumer health: towards a radiology patient portal.
CONCLUSIONS: Radiologic imaging composes a significant amount of the evidence used to make diagnostic and treatment decisions, yet there are few tools for explaining this information to patients. The proposed radiology patient portal provides a framework for organizing radiologic results into several information orientations to support patient education. Common Cause For Brain Tumors In Children
Brain cancer is the primary cause of cancer mortality in children. Even in cases when the cancer is cured, young patients suffer from the stress of a treatment that can be harmful to the developing brain. In a search for new target structures that would create more gentle treatments, cancer researchers are systematically analyzing all alterations in the genetic material of these tumors. This is the mission of the PedBrain consortium, which was launched in 2010...

Scientists' public engagement work should be generously funded | Clare Matterson, Wellcome Trust
Public engagement should be an integral part of research, not an unpaid hobby, which is why the Wellcome Trust has decided to invest £4.5m a year in itThere's an app that you might have seen, or even played – The Great Brain Experiment. It's cute, quirky and pretty addictive. Every time I turn on my iPad I find my children have been having a go (perhaps making me look far more mentally agile than I am). So far, over 40,000 people have downloaded and played the app. Among its deceptively simple games is one in which you have to grab apples as they fall from a tree – but beware the apples that turn rotten as they fall.T...

PORTR: Pre-Operative and Post-Recurrence Brain Tumor Registration
We propose a new method for deformable registration of pre-operative and post-recurrence brain MR scans of glioma patients. Performing this type of intra-subject registration is challenging as tumor, resection, recurrence, and edema cause large deformations, missing correspondences, and inconsistent intensity profiles between the scans. To address this challenging task, our method, called PORTR, explicitly accounts for pathological information. It segments tumor, resection cavity, and recurrence based on models specific to each scan. PORTR then uses the resulting maps to exclude pathological regions from the image-based co...

Search for brain tumor biomarkers in urine strikes gold
We report and comment on medical innovations and advances – from bench to bedside – touching on scientific, business and policy issues. Our ranks include science writers, physicians, lab researchers, market analysts and others inside and outside the hospital. By Tom Ulrich A good biomarker is one whose levels go up or down as a patient's disease worsens or wanes. A great biomarker also gives key insights into disease development. A really great biomarker does both of these things and also serves as a treatment target. Boston Children's HospitalNews Well, Vector Blog, Big Data, Blogread more

Coping with Seasonal Affective Disorder
When it comes to dealing with seasonal affective disorder — an extreme lethargy and sadness that accompanies the onset of winter — most sufferers have already heard it all when it comes to solutions. Here’s the drill in a nutshell: spend a good chunk of time in front of a lamp that emulates sunlight; meditate; plan trips to warm places; take long, soothing walks; keep a balanced diet and try to sustain a positive attitude. There’s really nothing new on the scene when it comes to treatment methods for SAD. But there’s a lot more to SAD than meets the eye — way beyond the feelings of listlessness and ...

The accuracy of prehospital diagnosis of acute cerebrovascular accidents: an observational study.
CONCLUSIONS: Emergency physicians appear to be sensitive in diagnosing CVAs but their overall accuracy does not seem high. They tend to overuse the diagnosis of TIA. Constant education and adoption of stroke screening scales may be beneficial for emergency care systems based both on physicians and on paramedics. PMID: 26170845 [PubMed]

Thyroid metastasis from small cell lung carcinoma: a case report and review of the literature
Conclusions We conclude that in a patient with a known history of malignant disease, the finding of a new thyroid mass should be promptly evaluated with a thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsy to search for metastatic disease. The clinical features of our and two previously reported cases were summarized.

The role of microRNA in metastatic processes of non-small cell lung carcinoma. A review.
CONCLUSION: Dysregulation of microRNAs in NSCLC can be associated with brain and lymph node metastasis. There are differences in microRNA expression profiling between NSCLC with and without metastases but it is currently not possible to reliably predict the site of metastasis in NSCLC. Based on data from RNAmicroarrays, bioinformatics analysis is able to predict the target genes of highlighted microRNAs, providing us with complex information about cancer cell features such as enhanced proliferation, migration and invasion. Such microRNAs may then be knocked-down using siRNAs or substituted with miRNA mimics. RNA microarray...
