Endothelial Small- and Intermediate-Conductance K Channels and Endothelium-Dependent Hyperpolarization as Drug Targets in Cardiovascular Disease.
Abstract Endothelial calcium/calmodulin-gated K channels of small (KCa2.3) and intermediate conductance (KCa3.1) produce membrane hyperpolarization and endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization (EDH)-mediated vasodilation. Dysfunctions of the two channels and ensuing EDH impairments are found in several cardiovascular pathologies such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, postangioplastic neointima formation, but also inflammatory disease, cancer, and organ fibrosis. Moreover, KCa3.1 plays an important role in endothelial barrier dysfunction, edema formation in cardiac and pulmonary disease, and in ischemic stroke. Concerni...

N‐terminal pro‐brain natriuretic peptide level determined at different times identifies transient ischaemic attack patients with atrial fibrillation
ConclusionHigh levels of NT‐proBNP determined during the first 3 months after a TIA were associated with AF. Consequently, this biomarker may be useful to reclassify undetermined TIA patients as having disease of CE.

Calcified Amorphous Tumor Causing Shower Embolism to the Brain: A Case Report with Serial Echocardiographic and Neuroradiologic Images and a Review of the Literature
An 89-year-old woman with chronic atrial fibrillation, hypertension, chronic heart failure, and dementia was admitted to our hospital due to multiple small cerebral and cerebellar infarctions. Transthoracic echocardiogram revealed a floating calcified mass lesion arising from the endocardium of the posterior portion of the mitral annulus with mitral annular calcification. Furthermore, the mass had a heterogeneity of the echogenicity. The mass was diagnosed as a calcified amorphous tumor based on specific echocardiographic features.

10 Biggest Myths About Sleeping, According To Researchers
(CNN) — Hey, sleepyheads. What you believe about sleep may be nothing but a pipe dream. Many of us have notions about sleep that have little basis in fact and may even be harmful to our health, according to researchers at NYU Langone Health’s School of Medicine, who conducted a study published Tuesday in the journal Sleep Health. “There’s such a link between good sleep and our waking success,” said lead study investigator Rebecca Robbins, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Population Health at NYU Langone Health. “And yet we often find ourselves debunking myths, whether ...

Cancers, Vol. 13, Pages 4012: Atrial Fibrillation after Lung Cancer Surgery: Prediction, Prevention, and Anticoagulation Management
rdinale Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common complication of the early postoperative period of various types of surgery, including that for lung cancer. Although induced by the homeostatic alterations related to surgery, there is evidence that it is not a mere stand-alone transitory event, but it represents a relevant complication of surgery, bearing considerable prognostic consequences. Different methods have therefore been explored to predict the occurrence of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) and prevent it. In particular, the age among clinical factors, and N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide ...

Intra-and peritumoral hemorrhage in the meningioma of a nonagenarian due to administration of direct oral anticoagulants after mechanical thrombectomy
CONCLUSION: Peritumoral edema representing a pial blood supply might be a significant factor associated with intracranial hemorrhage due to DOAC administration in patients with meningioma. The evaluation of hemorrhagic risk due to DOACs is important not only for meningioma but also for other brain tumor cases.PMID:37292413 | PMC:PMC10246366 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_18_2023
