A common 18F-FDG PET radiomic signature to predict survival in patients with HPV-induced cancers
Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging. 2023 Aug 26. doi: 10.1007/s00259-023-06320-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLocally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) and anal and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC and OPSCC) are mostly caused by oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HPV). In this paper, we developed machine learning (ML) models based on clinical, biological, and radiomic features extracted from pre-treatment fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ([18F]-FDG PET) images to predict the survival of patients with HPV-induced cancers. For this purpose, cohorts from five institutions were used: two cohorts o...

'Being a farmer, I mostly always think there is something more important to do': A mixed methods analysis of the skin cancer detection practices of Australian farmers
CONCLUSIONS: There is a need to make clinical skin cancer detection more accessible to farmers, in addition to promoting self-skin examination and help-seeking behaviours within this at risk population. SO WHAT?: Novel approaches are needed to address systemic barriers faced by Australian farmers. These may include the use of teledermatology or artificial intelligence to assist with CSE. Remote training delivery methods may be also utilised to teach SSE skills to farmers who may be otherwise unable to access such opportunities.PMID:37611617 | DOI:10.1002/hpja.796

The family lifestyles, actions and risk education (FLARE) study: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial of a sun protection intervention for children of melanoma survivors
CONCLUSION: The FLARE trial addresses the need for melanoma preventive interventions for children with familial risk for the disease. If efficacious, FLARE could help to mitigate familial risk for melanoma among these children by teaching practices which, if enacted, decrease sunburn occurrence and improve children's use of well-established sun protection strategies.PMID:37393004 | DOI:10.1016/j.cct.2023.107276

Fight Aging! Newsletter, June 26th 2023
This study explored the association between different cooking fuel types and the risk of cancer and all-cause mortality among seniors constructing Cox regression models. Data were obtained by linking waves of 6, 7, and 8 of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, which included a total of 7,269 participants who were 65 years old and over. Cooking fuels were categorized as either biomass, fossil, or clean fuels. And the effects of switching cooking fuels on death risk were also investigated using Cox regression models. The results indicate that, compared with the users of clean fuels, individuals using bio...

Carcinoma vulva: Ten years experience in a teaching institution of North India
CONCLUSION: Tumour stage, nodal positivity and nodal ECS were poor prognostic factors. Radical surgery-extensive groin node dissection causes significant morbidity; hence, studies evaluating the role of neoadjuvant treatment are needed so as to modify current treatment practices. HPV vaccination as a preventive measure and a thorough and extensive evaluation of patients with suspicious signs in vulvar disease is needed.PMID:37312782 | PMC:PMC10259558 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_1731_22

Prediction Models for Mediastinal Metastasis and its Detection by Endobronchial Ultrasound-Guided Transbronchial Needle Aspiration in Potentially Operable Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer - A Prospective Study
Chest. 2023 Apr 3:S0012-3692(23)00469-5. doi: 10.1016/j.chest.2023.03.041. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Prediction models for mediastinal metastasis and its detection by endobronchial ultrasound guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) have not been developed using a prospective cohort of potentially operable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.RESEARCH QUESTION: Can mediastinal metastasis and its detection by EBUS-TBNA be predicted with prediction models in NSCLC?STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: For the prospective development cohort, 589 potentially operable NSCLC patients were evaluated (July 20...

Histopathology spectrum of skin lesions in teaching institution
CONCLUSION: Leprosy and Basal cell carcinoma were most commonly observed infective and neoplastic skin lesion in our study respectively. Therefore, community should be educated to prevent airborne droplet transmission and repeated unprotected ultraviolet light sun exposure to reduce the prevalence of both these diseases. We suggest such type of study in different geographical area to plan preventive strategy to reduce morbidity due to various skin lesion.PMID:36353033 | PMC:PMC9638679 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_2016_21

Conclusion: These assays are suitable for routine diagnostic. The UltraFast NextGenPCR is the fastest with average time (30mins), followed by Agilent (2 hrs) and MassArray (6hrs). Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to examine, measure and compare results from different assays for SARS detection, evaluate and diagnose accurately, as well as being able to plan, organize and recommend a diagnostic procedure for diagnostic laboratory. Key words: SARS-CoV-2, RNA extraction, RT-PCR, limit of detection, quantification cycle, COVID-19, in vitro diagnostic tests, Agilent, Massarray, Ultrafast. [20] From t...
