Chasing Zero Harm in Radiation Oncology: Using Pre-treatment Peer Review
Conclusions: Catching errors prior to treatment is the only way to “chase zero” in radiation oncology. Various types of errors may exist in treatment plans and our GCPR model succeeds in preventing many errors of all shapes and sizes in target definition, dose prescriptions, and treatment plans from ever reaching the patients. Background and Introduction Since the release of the seminal report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) titled, “To Err is Human,” in 1999, the importance of patient safety and avoiding medical errors have been recognized and endorsed by the physician communit...

Patient-Focused Online Resources for Melanoma: Highly Variable Content and Quality
AbstractWhen patients are diagnosed or concerned with the diagnosis of melanoma, they commonly use the Internet for information. We assessed the content of patient-focused websites about melanoma. We searched for “melanoma” in four search engines then assessed the first 30 websites in each search. Among included sites, we describe potentially useful content about melanoma: website quality, readability, popularity, and social media sharing. In 31 included websites,>  80% mentioned the definition and risk factors for melanoma, when to seek medical help, how to diagnose, and treatment options, and>  70% describe...

Basket Trials for Intractable Cancer
This study has made a significant impact on clinical practice in cancer patients harboring the TRK translocation, and also illustrates the potential for future advancements in drug development and clinical trials of cancers harboring rare genomic alterations (50). Second, a basket trial may allow screening for potential efficacy across multiple tumor types in order to guide more traditional, disease-specific, follow-up studies. The goal of some basket trials is to obtain an overall assessment of the drug with pooled histologies; in such trials, subsequent analyses are straightforward, and are comparable to those in standa...

What Are Indications for Dermatological Light Treatment?
Discussion Spider telangiectasia or spider angiomas have a central red lesion with radiating dilatation of the distal, end vasculature that resemble arachnid appendages. They are common lesions (up to 38% in one study of children, and 60% in pregnant women), often solitary or < 3 lesions, and usually benign. Multiple lesions are characteristic of chronic liver disease. They can disappear over time (especially pregnancy related ones) but may not. The cause of these vascular lesions is unknown. Treatment is often not necessary, but laser treatments, fine needle electrocautery or electrodissection can be used. Learning Poi...

A study of internet searches for medical information in dermatology patients: The patient-physician relationship.
CONCLUSIONS: The search for medical information is a widespread reality among patients with psoriasis and melanoma and it is not associated with a poor relationship with the physician. Dermatologists can play a beneficial role by recommending trustworthy Internet sites during the patient's visit and by promoting the development of pages by scientific societies to provide high-quality information. Diagnosis of Cutaneous Melanoma: the Gap Between the Knowledge of General Practitioners and Dermatologists in a Brazilian Population
AbstractThe early diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma provides less aggressive treatment reducing mortality. General practitioners are responsible for cancer diagnoses in the Brazilian Public Health System and therefore play a crucial role in the prevention and early detection of melanoma. To assess the melanoma knowledge of a primary healthcare physician, the general practitioner, compared to a dermatologist. General practitioners and dermatologists answered a questionnaire about melanoma and the management of suspected cases. The results of both groups were compared. The sample consisted of 80 specialists and 160 general pra...
