Financial Estimation of the Uncertainty in Medicine Using Present Value of Medical Fees and a Mortality Risk Prediction Model: a Retrospective Cohort Study
This study aimed to develop a method to enable the financial estimation of each patient ’s uncertainty without focusing on healthcare technology. We define financial uncertainty (FU) as the difference between an actual amount of claim (AC) and the discounted present value of the AC (DAC). DAC can be calculated based on a discounted present value calculated using a cash flow, a period of investment, and a discount rate. The present study considered these three items as AC, the length of hospital stay, and the predicted mortality rate. The mortality prediction model was built using typical data items in standard level elec...

Cell and gene therapies at the forefront of innovative medical care: Implications for South Africa.
Authors: Pepper MS, Alessandrini M, Pope A, Van Staden W, Green RJ Abstract The fields of cell and gene therapy are moving rapidly towards providing innovative cures for incurable diseases. A current and highly topical example is immunotherapies involving T-cells that express chimeric antigen receptors (CAR T-cells), which have shown promise in the treatment of leukaemia and lymphoma. These new medicines are indicative of the changes we can anticipate in the practice of medicine in the near future. Despite their promise, they pose challenges for introduction into the healthcare sector in South Africa (SA), includin...

Theranostics in Hematooncology
In the early 2000s, major clinical trials provided evidence of a favorable outcome from antibody-mediated radioimmunotherapy for hematologic neoplasms, which then led to Food and Drug Administration approval. For instance, the theranostic armamentarium for the referring hematooncologist now includes 90Y-ibritumomab tiuxetan for refractory low-grade follicular lymphoma or transformed B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, as well as 131I-tositumomab for rituximab-refractory follicular lymphoma. Moreover, the first interim results of the SIERRA phase III trial reported beneficial effects from the use of 131I-anti-CD45 antibodies (Ioma...

Association Between Cancer Incidence and Mortality in Web-Based Data in China: Infodemiology Study
Conclusions: Search behaviors indeed reflect public awareness of cancer from a different angle. Research on internet search behaviors could present an innovative and timely way to monitor and estimate cancer incidence and mortality rates, especially for cancers not included in national registries.

Extranodal Natural Killer/T-Cell Lymphoma Nasal Type in 87 Cases from Spain: Clinical Presentation, Treatment and Prognostic Factors. Study from the Geltamo Group
Conclusion: This is the largest series reported of Caucasian patients with ENKTL-NT. Patients are young at diagnosis and one fourth had a previous history of chronic sinusitis. This population has a poor outcome, being progression the main cause of death. Poor clinical condition at diagnosis (high ECOG PS and low albumin level) is the main factor related with poor survival. Therapies with high dose L-Asparaginase improve the survival in this western population compared with the classical CHOP regimen.DisclosuresGonzález-Barca: Roche: Speakers Bureau; Celtrion: Consultancy; Gilead: Consultancy; janssen: Consultancy, ...

Second primary cancers: a retrospective analysis of real world data using the enhanced medical research engine ConSoRe in a French comprehensive cancer center
CONCLUSION: The data mining tool ConSoRe contributes to access to real world data, and to better characterize patients with SPC. Expanding such approach to any comprehensive center will allow a global overview of the follow-up of patients with cancer, and help to improve long-term management and adapt surveillance.PMID:34091824 | DOI:10.1007/s10147-021-01963-3
