Methylated Septin9 (m < em > SEPT9 < /em > ): A promising blood-based biomarker for the detection and screening of early-onset colorectal cancer
Cancer Res Commun. 2022 Feb;2(2):90-98. doi: 10.1158/2767-9764.crc-21-0142. Epub 2022 Feb 11.ABSTRACTEarly-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC), defined as a diagnosis under age 50, is an emerging public health burden. As many of these individuals fall outside of screening guidelines, the development of a minimally invasive, accurate screening modality for this population is warranted. We evaluated the FDA-approved blood-based biomarker methylated Septin9 (mSEPT9) test as screening tool for EOCRC. EOCRC plasma, healthy plasma, and serum-free conditioned media from cancer cell lines was collected. Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) was isola...

Colorectal cancer screening with fecal immunochemical testing: a community-based, cross-sectional study in average-risk individuals in Nigeria
This study aimed to assess the fecal immunochemical test as a colorectal cancer screening modality in average-risk individualS in Nigeria.METHODS: A population-based, cross-sectional study of qualitative fecal immunochemical test-based colorectal cancer screening was done in asymptomatic, average-risk participants aged 45-75 years in three states in Nigeria (Osun, Kwara, and Lagos). Participants were invited to enrol using age-stratified and sex-stratified convenience sampling following community outreach. Exclusion criteria included a personal history of colorectal cancer or rectal bleeding in the previous 6 months, a fir...

Recommendations for Randomised Trials in Surgical Oncology
Trials of surgical procedures in the treatment of malignant disease face a unique set of challenges. This review aimed to describe recommendations for the design, delivery and reporting of randomised trials in surgical oncology. A literature search was carried out without date limits to identify articles related to trial methodology research in surgery and surgical oncology. A narrative review was framed around two open National Institute of Health Research portfolio trials in colon and rectal cancer: the STAR-TREC trial (ISRCTN14240288) and the ROCCS trial (ISRCTN46330337).

New Bill Seeks to Create First Mesothelioma Registry in US
People diagnosed with mesothelioma often feel there is little public information about the asbestos-related cancer. Several existing state cancer registries focus on more common cancers, including lung, breast, prostate and colorectal. While there are more than 221,000 new lung cancer cases annually in the U.S., mesothelioma is rare — about 3,000 new cases each year. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, a national cancer registry, tracks incidence rates by state, but it does not track new cases of mesothelioma at a national level.
