Patients experience of using colonoscopy as a diagnostic test after a positive FOBT/FIT: a systematic review of the quantitative literature
Conclusion This review highlighted that patient-reported experiences associated with colonoscopy were generally positive. To improve the colonoscopy experience, bowel screening centres should investigate means to: make bowel preparation more acceptable, make colonoscopy less painful and reduce post-colonoscopy symptoms.

Colorectal cancer stage-distribution at first and repeat fecal immunochemical test screening
CONCLUSION: FIT-based screening is effective in downstaging CRC, also at repeat screening. Increasing the FIT cut-off level has limited impact on the stage-distribution of detected CRCs, though greatly affects CRC detection and thus is important to keep low.PMID:37619823 | DOI:10.1016/j.cgh.2023.07.028

Colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease: double the burden when it comes to your health-related quality of life?
CONCLUSIONS: CRC patients with CVD, specifically those with new-onset CVD, reported a significantly and clinically relevant worse HRQoL compared with those who never had comorbid CVD. These findings seem to indicate, although the number is small, that CRC patients might have cardiovascular needs that need to be addressed and that multidisciplinary care is recommended. Larger studies are needed to confirm this.PMID:37609784 | DOI:10.1080/0284186X.2023.2245131

Impact of COVID-19 control on lung, breast, and colorectal pathological cancer diagnoses. A comparison between the Netherlands, Aotearoa New Zealand, and Northern Ireland
CONCLUSION: The impact of COVID-19 on cancer services was mitigated in NZ as services continued as usual reflecting minimal healthcare disruption and protected cancer services linked with the elimination approach adopted. The reduction in PD cases diagnosed in NED and NI were linked with higher COVID-19 rates and reflect societal restrictions which resulted in delayed patient presentation to primary and secondary care, disruption to screening and healthcare services as a result of COVID-19 infections on staff and the need to shift intensive care to COVID-19 patients. Reductions in PD cancers in NI and the NED and in partic...

Salvage surgery for local recurrences after stereotactic ablative radiotherapy of colorectal pulmonary metastases
CONCLUSIONS: Our experience with 20 salvage pulmonary metastasectomy procedures for local recurrences following SABR in colorectal cancer patients demonstrates that salvage resection is a feasible option with acceptable morbidity and good oncological outcome in a highly selected cohort.PMID:37477423 | DOI:10.1002/jso.27404

Venous and arterial thromboembolism after colorectal cancer in the Netherlands: Incidence, predictors, and prognosis
CONCLUSIONS: This Dutch nationwide cohort study adds detailed knowledge on the risk of VTE and ATE, their predictors and prognosis in CRC-patients. These findings may drive TE prophylactic management decisions.PMID:37421683 | DOI:10.1016/j.thromres.2023.06.028

A Smartphone-Delivered Program (Anathema) to Promote the Sexual Health of Older Adults, Colorectal Cancer Survivors, and Stroke Survivors: Protocol for a Feasibility Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial
CONCLUSIONS: The study results will inform the refinement and scale-up of Anathema. Anathema's wider-scale implementation can potentially promote the sexual health of largely neglected user groups such as older adults, colorectal cancer survivors, and stroke survivors.INTERNATIONAL REGISTERED REPORT IDENTIFIER (IRRID): DERR1-10.2196/46734.PMID:37368469 | DOI:10.2196/46734

Primary tumor resection or systemic treatment as palliative treatment for patients with isolated synchronous colorectal cancer peritoneal metastases in a nationwide cohort study
Clin Exp Metastasis. 2023 May 20. doi: 10.1007/s10585-023-10212-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLimited data are available to guide the decision-making process for clinicians and their patients regarding palliative treatment options for patients with isolated synchronous colorectal cancer peritoneal metastases (CRC-PM). Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the outcome of the different palliative treatments for these patients. All patients diagnosed with isolated synchronous CRC-PM between 2009 and 2020 (Netherlands Cancer Registry) who underwent palliative treatment were included. Patients who underwent emergenc...

Relationship between the Warburg effect in tumour cells and the tumour microenvironment in colorectal cancer patients: Results from a large multicentre study
Pathol Res Pract. 2023 May 11;247:154518. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2023.154518. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTColorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the most prevalent and deadly cancers worldwide. The tumour-node-metastasis stage (TNM) is currently the most clinically important tool to predict prognosis for CRC patients. However, patients with the same TNM stage can have different prognoses. The metabolic status of tumour cells (Warburg-subtype) has been proposed as potential prognostic factor in CRC. However, potential biological mechanisms underlying the relationship between Warburg-subtype and prognosis have not been investi...

Timing of rectal cancer surgery after short-course radiotherapy: national database study
CONCLUSION: There was no difference in surgical complication rates between SCRT-delay and SCRT-direct, but SCRT-delay was associated with more patients having a pCR.PMID:37172197 | DOI:10.1093/bjs/znad113
