The association between angiotensin receptor blockers and lung, bladder, and colon cancer development: A 10-year multicentric retrospective Lebanese study
Medicine (Baltimore). 2023 Sep 8;102(36):e34901. doi: 10.1097/MD.0000000000034901.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death globally, followed by cancer. Angiotensin II contributes greatly to CVD pathogenesis, and Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) constitute a mainstay in hypertension and CVD management. However, the relationship between ARBs and cancer initiation is controversial, with no clear data in Lebanon. Therefore, our study aimed to determine the association between ARBs intake and lung, bladder, and colorectal cancers development in the Lebanese population. A retrospective study w...

Comorbidity Patterns in Patients Newly Diagnosed With Colorectal Cancer: Network-Based Study
CONCLUSIONS: Male-female and urban-rural disparities in the prevalence of single comorbidities and their complex coexistence relationships in new CRC cases were not due to simple coincidence. The results reflect clinical practice in CRC patients and emphasize the importance of measuring comorbidity patterns in terms of individual and coexisting diseases in order to better understand comorbidity patterns.PMID:37669093 | DOI:10.2196/41999

Impacts of some clinicopathodemography and colorectal tissues key cell cycle and mucin stabilizing molecules on the metastasis trend in colorectal cancer patients
CONCLUSION: B3GALNT2, MUC1, and "Ki67" can be used as promising biomarkers for prognosis and early diagnosis of increasingly/predominantly non-genetic/environmental originated metastatic CRCs.PMID:37644368 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-023-08766-x

Racial Differences in Over-the-Counter Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug Use Among Individuals at Risk of Adverse Cardiovascular Events
CONCLUSIONS: Black individuals at risk of ACEs had higher odds of any OTC NSAID and HPP-NSAID use than non-Black individuals, after controlling for pain and socio-economic status. Further research is necessary to identify potential mechanisms driving this increased use.PMID:37594625 | DOI:10.1007/s40615-023-01743-x

Alteration of Metabolic Syndrome Is Associated with the Decreased Risk of Colorectal Cancer
J Clin Med. 2023 Jul 25;12(15):4889. doi: 10.3390/jcm12154889.ABSTRACTMetabolic syndrome (MetS) can be resolved through active control. We aimed to examine the effect of changes in MetS status on colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. A total of 5,704,611 Korean national insurance beneficiaries that received two consecutive biennial mandatory health exams (2009-2011) were followed-up until 2017. MetS was determined as the presence of at least three of five components. Participants were categorized into four groups according to the change in MetS status; MetS-never, -resolved, -developed, or -persistent. A Cox proportional hazards m...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, July 24th 2023
In this study, we tested the hypothesis that periodontal disease (PD) as a source of infection alters inflammatory activation and Aβ phagocytosis by the microglial cells. Experimental PD was induced using ligatures in C57BL/6 mice for 1, 10, 20, and 30 days to assess the progression of PD. Animals without ligatures were used as controls. Ligature placement caused progressive periodontal disease and bone resorption that was already significant on day 1 post-ligation and continued to increase until day 30. The severity of periodontal disease increased the frequency of activated microglia in the brains on day 30 by 36...

Comparison of Ambulatory Quality Measures Between Shared Practice Panels and Independent Practice Panels
CONCLUSION: This study shows a considerable improvement in depression remission among IPP panels and in cervical cancer screening rates among SPP panels. This information may help to inform primary care team configuration.PMID:37388418 | PMC:PMC10300043 | DOI:10.1016/j.mayocpiqo.2023.05.005
